No. 8-ranked Tommies score sweep of Auggies

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Valerie Whichello (SR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) gave Augsburg University a second-period lead, but the University of St. Thomas scored three unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday afternoon at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a scoreless first period, Whichello gave the Auggies the lead 3:53 into the second frame, scoring a power-play goal from Megan Johnson (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Hollywood Hermanson (JR, Dover, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS). The goal was just the fourth surrendered this season by the Tommies, who have outscored their opponents by a 34-4 margin. It was only the second power play goal St. Thomas has given up in 34 opponent power-play opportunities this season.
• Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 28-27 margin in the game. Annie Juergens (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had 24 saves in goal for the Auggies.
• Mackenzie Molnar (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had eight shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Emily Ach (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had three shots.
• For the second straight night, Augsburg did not commit a penalty. 

FOR THE FOES
• Anna Solheim and Heidi Hannula scored second-period goals for St. Thomas, with Maddy Fiedler had an open-net goal. She added an assist for a two-point night.
• Kenzie Torpy had 27 saves in goal to pick up the win for the Tommies, ranked No. 8 in the latest USCHO.com Division III national poll and No. 9 in the latest d3hockey.com national poll.
