Johnnies top Auggies 85-73

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Augsburg University men's basketball team fell 85-73 to No. 6-ranked Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Johnnies shot an impressive 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the floor as well as from three-point range (9-of-13) in the first half, and took a 49-34 lead into the locker room at the intermission. After trailing by 22 with just under 14 minutes to play, Augsburg rallied to cut the Johnnie lead to just six points (69-63) with 6:27 remaining in the action. The Auggies couldn't quite finish the comeback as Saint John's pulled away late to clinch the MIAC regular-season championship.
Booker Coplin (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) led the Augsburg offense with 21 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Coplin is averaging 13.7 points per-game this season, but is averaging 20.5 points per-game over his last four contests.
• Marking his 13th 20-plus-point performance of the season, Collin Olmscheid (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) matched his season average, finishing with 20 points, while adding five rebounds. Olmscheid battled foul trouble and picked up his fifth foul with 4:19 to play.
• Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was Harry Sonie (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Matt Carik (FY, Rogers, Minn/Rogers HS), who finished with 13 and 11 points respectively. Sonie was 4-for-8 from the field and added three assists and a pair of rebounds. Carik tied an Auggie career-high with 11 points, connecting on 3-of-5 from three-point range, while dishing out a pair of assists.
Kevin McKiernan (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) dished out a team-best five assists, while chipping in three points.
• Augsburg was held to a season-low shooting performance, connecting on just 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the field, while St. John's connected on 52.9 percent (27-of-51) of its shot attempts.
• The Auggies forced 18 Saint John's turnovers, while committing a season-low three miscues. Augsburg posted a 24-0 advantage in points off turnovers.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now clinched a spot in the six-team MIAC post season playoffs. Saint John's (17-1 MIAC) has clinched the No. 1 seed and St. Olaf (14-4 MIAC) clinched the No. 2 seed, while the No. 3 through No. 6 seeds will be determined by Bethel (12-6 MIAC), Augsburg (12-7 MIAC), Carleton (11-7) and St. Thomas (11-7). The quarterfinals will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21 with the No. 6 seed at the No. 3 seed and the No. 5 seed at the No. 4 seed. The semifinals take place on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. and will feature the lowest remaining seed at No. 1 Saint John's and the highest remaining seed at No. 2 St. Olaf, with a championship to take place on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.

FOR THE FOES
• Saint John's, ranked No. 6 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, had a balanced offensive attack, finishing with five players in double figures. 
• Brent Hentges led the Johnnie offense with 15 points, while Lucas Walford pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while adding 14 points.
• The Johnnies claimed a 46-21 advantage on the boards.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/17) at 1 p.m. with the Auggies' final regular-season contest hosting Macalester College at Si Melby Hall.
• St. John's returns to action on Wednesday (2/14), traveling to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
