Auggies spread out scoring in 6-3 victory

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Six different players scored goals, and 10 different Augsburg University men's hockey players figured in the scoring, as the Auggies claimed a 6-3 victory at Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 after one period, Augsburg poured on the scoring in the final two periods, scoring three goals in each while claiming a 37-29 shots on-goal advantage in the game. Will Peterson (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and Jake Larson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had a goal and assist each to lead the Auggies.
• Augsburg took a 2-1 lead with two goals in a 1:09 span early in the second period, as Evan Hesse (SR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) scored from Tommy Carey (FY, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS), and Peterson scored an unassisted, extra-attacker goal on a delayed penalty.
Drew Anderson (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) gave the Auggies a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal from Peterson at the 15:12 mark of the second period, and after Concordia tied the game with a power-play marker 4:13 into the third period, the Auggies took the lead for good 91 seconds later, as Lukas Gillett (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) scored from Alex Rodriguez (JR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS).
• The Auggies gained two insurance goals late, as Gunnar Goodmanson (FY, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) scored from Adam Pancoast (SR, Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS) and Larson, and Larson capped the scoring with an empty-net goal from Matt Nehls (FY, Boulder, Colo./D.C. West HS) with 15 seconds to play.
Nick Schmit (JR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 26 saves in goal for the Auggies, improving to 15-7-0 on the year.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now won 16 or more games for the third straight season. The Auggies claimed 17 overall wins each of the last two years. The Auggies have recorded nine or more MIAC wins for the fourth year in a row.
• Friday's win marked the 10th game in which Augsburg has scored five or more goals this season. Augsburg has outscored its opponents by an 89-58 margin this season, with its 3.71 goals-per-game average leading the MIAC's overall statistics, and its 2.42 goals allowed per-game average sitting fourth-best among league teams.

FOR THE FOES
• Sean Lang scored a power-play goal from Huba Sekesi and Matt Colford at the 6:03 mark of the first period, and Kyle Wagner gave the Johnnies the lead with a power-play goal from Mitch Fritz and Valerius at the 16:00 mark of the opening frame.
• Andrew Lindgren had 38 saves in goal in picking up the win for the Johnnies.

• Augsburg finishes its series with Concordia on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
• Augsburg enters the final day of the regular season with a chance to finish anywhere from first to fourth in the MIAC standings, as it stands in second place with 30 league points, tied with Saint John's. St. Thomas leads the MIAC with 31 points entering its final game at Hamline on Saturday evening, after edging the Pipers 4-3 on Friday. Gustavus sits in fourth place with 27 points, after beating the Saint John's 2-1 on Friday. The Gusties and Johnnies have their final game on Saturday evening in St. Cloud, Minn.
