Auggies swept by No. 14-ranked Tommies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Limited to seven hits in the doubleheader, the Augsburg University softball team dropped a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games to the No. 14-ranked University of St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
SCORES: St. Thomas 3, Augsburg 1; St. Thomas 8, Augsburg 0 (6 inn.)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 14-12 overall (6-4 MIAC), St. Thomas 19-5 overall (9-1 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 1-0 after the top of the second inning, Augsburg tied the game at 1-1, as a hit batter, single and two straight walks brought in a run. But St. Thomas was able to score single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and the Auggies were held scoreless after their second-inning run.
• Carly Dropik (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) walked in the Auggies' run in the second inning and hit a double in the bottom of the seventh.
• Samantha Anderson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) struck out three while walking one and allowing seven hits in a complete-game pitching effort for Augsburg, her 12th complete game in her 13 starts this season.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Tommies scored three runs in the top of the first, then scored three more runs in the fourth inning to build an insurmountable lead. St. Thomas took advantage of four Augsburg errors in the game, with four of their runs unearned against two Augsburg pitchers. The game ended after six innings due to the NCAA's eight-run rule.
• Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) pitched the first five innings for the Auggies, with Bella Kallas (FY, Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) pitching the sixth inning in relief with a strikeout.
• Anesia King (SO, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), Jacquline Nichols (JR, Royalton, Minn./Royalton HS) and Taylor Mattice (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial HS) had base hits for Augsburg.

FOR THE FOES
• Sammy Hogan picked up both pitching wins for St. Thomas, ranked No. 14 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national poll. She struck out four while allowing just two hits in 4.1 innings of relief in the first game, then allowed just three hits while striking out two in a complete-game win in the second game. Hogan also hit a solo home run for the Tommies in the first game.
• JSam Birling went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the first game.
