Auggies swept by Blazers in start of busy stretch

MINNEAPOLIS -- In the first of four doubleheaders in a five-day span for the Augsburg University softball team, the Auggies dropped a pair of games to the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg was unable to get a hit off of Saint Benedict pitcher Ally Hjort, who struck out nine against two walks for a no-hitter.
• Augsburg had just three baserunners in the first game. Samantha Anderson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) walked in the second and seventh innings, and Anesia King (SO, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) was hit by a pitch in the third inning.
• Anderson started and pitched 3.2 innings. Just one of the six runs charged to Anderson were earned, as the Auggies committed two errors during a five-run fourth inning for the Blazers. Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg surrendered single runs in the third and fifth innings. Augsburg scored a run in the sixth, as Anderson reached base on an error, moved up a base on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Taylor Mattice (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial HS). The Auggies had two runners on base in the seventh inning, but neither were able to score.
• Anderson, Mattice and Katie Parker (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) hit singles for Augsburg.
• Malley pitched five innings for the Auggies, allowing just three hits. Anderson pitched the sixth inning, allowing one hit.

FOR THE FOES
• Kendra Swanson hit a solo home run in the second inning of the first game, and Karlee Pfaff hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning for the Blazers. Kate Deming hit a run-scoring triple, and Megan Toninato went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
• Emily Antony drove in both runs in the second game on RBI groundouts. Deming scored both runs for the Blazers.
• Alex Smith pitched a complete-game victory, striking out seven against two walks and three hits.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg faces St. Catherine on Thursday (4/19) at 4 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at St. Catherine, but was moved to Augsburg's dome due to weather. St. Catherine will be the designated "home" team in both games.
• Saint Benedict plays at Bethel on Saturday (4/21) at 1 p.m.
