Auggies drop pair to St. Catherine

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University softball team fell in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to the College of St. Catherine on Thursday at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
SCORES: St. Catherine 5, Augsburg 1; St. Catherine 12, Augsburg 5
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 14-16 overall (6-8 MIAC), St. Catherine 13-10 overall (6-2 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored its lone run in the second inning, when Jacquline Nichols (JR, Royalton, Minn./Royalton HS) hit a run-scoring double to plate Katie Parker (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), who had led off the inning with a single.
Samantha Anderson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) had a single in the third inning, which was the final hit for the Auggies in the game. The Auggies did not have another baserunner until the seventh inning, when a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases with one out. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
• Anderson struck out one while walking three and allowing six hits in a complete-game effort for the Auggies.
• Anderson started and pitched 3.2 innings. Just one of the six runs charged to Anderson were earned, as the Auggies committed two errors during a five-run fourth inning for the Blazers.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg surrendered two runs in the first inning and five runs in both the third and fourth innings, before scoring five runs of its own in the fifth to avoid an early ending to the game due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) hit a two-run single, and after the bases were loaded on a two-out error, Parker hit a three-run single to cap the fifth-inning rally for the Auggies.
• Parker hit a double in the fourth inning as part of a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
• Malley, Bella Kallas (FY, Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) and Anderson all pitched for the Auggies, with Malley and Anderson claiming two strikeouts each.

FOR THE FOES
• Anna Hinderaker and Claire Woebke each hit two-run doubles for St. Catherine in the first game.
• Krista Flugstad picked up the first-game pitching win with an eight-strikeout effort, while Kathryn Proper also struck out eight in the second-game victory.
