Augsburg splits twinbill with Saint Mary's

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University softball team rallied for a 4-3, nine-inning victory in the first game, while Saint Mary's University scored a 4-1 win in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Anesia King (SO, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) walked, moved to second on a single by Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), then scored the tying run on an RBI single by Samantha Anderson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS).
• In the ninth, Malley reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single by Anderson, then scored the game-winning run on a single to left by Katie Parker (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS).
• An Anderson single plated King with the first run of the game for Augsburg in the first inning, and doubles by Jacquline Nichols (JR, Royalton, Minn./Royalton HS) and King brought home a run in the second.
• Anderson pitched 5.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory, striking out seven while not walking a batter and allowing just five hits and an unearned run. Malley pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Auggies.
• Anderson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while King had two doubles and Parker had a double among her two hits.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Saint Mary's took advantage of five Augsburg errors in the game, with four coming in the fourth and fifth innings, to take the lead for good. The final three runs for the Cardinals were all unearned against Auggie pitcher Anderson, who struck out three while not walking a batter in a complete-game effort.
• Malley hit a one-out double for the Auggies in the bottom of the first, and came home on an RBI double by Parker.
• King had two hits for the Auggies in the second game.

FOR THE FOES
• Justine Schultz hit two doubles in the second game and scored two runs as part of a three-hit afternoon.
• Shayley Vesel drove in two runs and went 3-for-4 in the second game, and Kali Aldrich also had three hits in the doubleheader.
• Amber Chow struck out five while allowing one walk and four hits in a complete-game victory in the second game.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg takes on Hamline on Sunday (4/22) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Hamline, but was moved to Augsburg due to field conditions. Hamline will be the home team in both games.
• Saint Mary's will also play at Edor Nelson Field on Sunday, with a doubleheader against St. Catherine starting at 7:30 a.m.
