Augsburg scores pair of 1-run wins over St. Olaf

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) went 4-for-4 and reached base in seven of his eight plate appearances in the doubleheader, leading Augsburg University to a sweep of St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Concordia College-Moorhead.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Donovan Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS). Pinch-runner Chris Steinhoff (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) moved to third on a single by Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS), then scored the game-winning run on a single to right-center by Brookshaw.
• Augsburg matched St. Olaf twice to force extra innings in the opener. Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Auggies tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame. Bakko drove home Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) on a fielder's choice, and Brookshaw hit a sacrifice fly to plate Tomony.
• After St. Olaf took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the sixth, the Auggies tied the game again in the bottom of the inning, as Brookshaw singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Keane Turner (SR, Clinton, Minn./Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley HS).
• Bakko, Brookshaw, Turner and Tomony had two hits each for the Auggies.
• Dayton Danielson (SO, St. Charles, Minn./St. Charles HS) started and pitched eight innings, striking out seven while allowing three walks. Ryan Kain (SR, Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township HS) gained the win for the Auggies in relief, throwing a scoreless ninth inning and taking advantage of a 6-4-3 double play to end the St. Olaf 10th.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Tied 1-1 after five innings, Augsburg took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brookshaw led off the inning with a single, and with two outs, scored on an outfield error following a single by Dylan Foote (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS).
• The Auggies took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Bakko hit a one-out single, advanced to third on a pair of walks, then scored on an RBI groundout by Cam Erikson (SR, Albuquerque, N.M./La Cuerva HS). 
• Jamie Kaye (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) pitched his third complete-game of the season, striking out six while not walking a batter and allowing eight hits. In the top of the seventh, the Ole leadoff hitter reached base and got to third with two outs, but a groundout back to Kaye ended the game.

FOR THE FOES
• TJ Rogers had four hits in the doubleheader for St. Olaf, while Sam Stuckmayer had three hits, including two doubles, in the first game.
• Jake Ossell hit a solo home run for the Oles in the second game.
• Hanson Devine struck out four while walking two in the second game, while starter Jake Mathison struck out seven in eight innings of work in the first game.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg takes on host Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (4/21) at 9:30 a.m. in the second day of the three-day MIAC pod in Moorhead.
• St. Olaf faces St. Thomas in a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m., also in Moorhead.
