Auggies edged twice in extra innings by Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team was edged twice in extra innings by Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, falling 4-3 in 13 innings and 7-6 in nine innings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) drove in all three runs for the Auggies in the first game, with a two-run single in the third inning and an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.
• With one out in the seventh, the Auggies loaded the bases, with a walk by Donovan Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and singles by Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS). Brookshaw then drove in pinch runner Josh Tyler (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS). 
• Two errors and a sacrifice fly gave Concordia the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Auggies loaded the bases with one out, but a forceout at home and a groundout ended the game.
Jacob Kari (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) started and struck out two while walking one in seven innings. Quentin Lake (FY, Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) struck out five while not walking a batter in five innings of scoreless relief.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Sending 10 batters to the plate, Augsburg scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead in the second game. Augsburg had six hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Keane Turner (SR, Clinton, Minn./Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley HS) and RBI singles by Ryan Masui (JR, Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS).
• Two more runs came across in the fifth, as Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) singled home Bakko and Bodine singled home Masui.
• The Cobbers put single runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings, then scored three runs in the top of the seventh, including the game-tying run on a bases-loaded balk. Concordia took the lead with a pair of singles and a balk in the ninth. Augsburg had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but a lineout ended the game.
• Bodine went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI, while DeCroock, Bakko, Turner and Tomony had two hits each. Bakko scored two runs and Turner drove in two runs.

FOR THE FOES
• Chad Johnson had five hits in the doubleheader, including a double. Jack Hiedeman had two hits in each game, driving in two runs and scoring two runs. Nate Hoeft also had two hits in each game, scoring a run.
• Austin Ver Steeg struck out six while walking three in seven innings of work in the first game, and Colin Richards had five strikeouts against a walk in six innings of relief to claim the win.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg faces St. Thomas on Sunday (4/22) at 9:30 a.m. in the final day of the three-day MIAC pod in Moorhead.
• Concordia hosts St. Olaf in a doubleheader on Sunday at 3 p.m., also in Moorhead.
