Augsburg drops 3-1 decision to Wartburg

MINNEAPOLIS -- In a battle of traditionally solid women's soccer teams in the region, Wartburg College claimed a 3-1 nonconference victory over host Augsburg University on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Wartburg (Iowa) 3, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-4-0 overall, Wartburg 5-3-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wartburg scored twice in a 4:04 span midway through the first half to take a 2-0 lead, and the Auggies trimmed the advantage to 2-1 at halftime. But Wartburg took a 3-1 lead with a goal 3:06 into the second half, and Augsburg was unable to crack Wartburg's strong defensive shell, despite outshooting the Knights by a 19-12 margin, 11-6 in the second half.
• Ashley St. Aubin (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS), who leads the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in both goals (seven) and points (15), scored the lone goal of the game for the Auggies at the 26:29 mark, taking a feed from Gabriela Encarnacion (JR, Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS) and firing a blast from the top of the penalty box that went into the net, despite being touched by the Wartburg goalkeeper.
• St. Aubin had nine shots in the game, while Callie Athey (SO, Eagan, Minn./Burnsville HS), Kealie Espinda Banick (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Jessy Wiskofske (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) had three shots each.
• Augsburg goalkeeper Emily Chapman (JR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) had three saves in a losing effort.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The loss snapped a 27-game streak of Augsburg wins or ties (26-0-1) when St. Aubin has scored at least one goal in her collegiate career.
• With her goal, St. Aubin moved into second place in Augsburg's all-time career goal scoring list with her 39th career goal. She now trails only OIivia Muyres '15 (2011-14), who scored a school-record 46 goals in her career. Her 90 career points (39 goals, 12 assists) put her fourth in school history in the category, with Muyres holding the school record with 119 (46 goals, 27 assists).

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "That was disappointing. Wartburg is a strong team for sure, but overall that was not a good performance from us tonight. As I told the team after the game, a lot of greatness is about consistency. We need to be more consistent in our effort and energy. I have a lot of confidence in our group, though. I know we will learn from this game and respond."

FOR THE FOES
• Alyssa Drewelow assisted on Wartburg's first goal, a header by Nicole Adair at the 20:45 mark, the scored an unassisted goal on a rising shot from 25 yards out at the 24:49 mark.
• Joy Smith scored on a shot following a sprint from 15 yards out, assisted by Emily Fontana, at the 48:06 mark.
• Marissa Lopez had five saves in goal for the Knights.
