Auggies bounce back with second-half outburst

NEW ULM, Minn. -- Scoring three goals in a nine-minute span in the second half, the Augsburg University men's soccer team claimed a 3-0 nonconference win at Martin Luther College on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A day after only its second loss of the season (1-0 at Gustavus), Augsburg responded with a dominant second half against the Knights. Augsburg outshot the hosts by a 13-0 margin in the second half, en route to a 17-4 shots advantage.
• The Auggies struck first at the 59:34 mark, as Eduardo Gomez (SO, Bloomington, Minn.) scored on a sliding shot off a cross by Peyton Boich (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) following a quick restart on a free kick. Sixty-seven seconds later, the Auggies made it 2-0, as Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored from Gomez on a right side sprint.
• Nick Zuchowski (FY, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a long free kick in the 69th minute. His six goals are second-most among MIAC players, while he is tied for the league lead in points with 15.
• Making his fourth appearance and first start of his career in goal, Ethan Derks (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) claimed two saves in the first half to pick up his first career shutout -- Augsburg's fourth shutout as a team this season.
• Gomez had four shots in the game, while Vang and Zuchowski had three shots each.

FOR THE FOES
• Gabriel Plocher had four saves in goal for Martin Luther.
• Dan Wessel had two of the Knights' four shots in the game.
