8-second goals give No. 1 Pointers win over No. 4 Auggies

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- A pair of goals eight seconds apart broke a tie midway through the second period, and the lead held up for the top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a 3-1 victory over No. 4-ranked Augsburg University in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Friday's game was a meeting of two of the top teams in NCAA Division III men's hockey -- unbeaten UW-Stevens Point entered the game ranked No. 1 in both Division III national polls (USCHO.com and D3hockey.com), while Augsburg was ranked No. 4 in both polls. The Auggies had their 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) and three-game winning streak snapped with the loss to the Pointers.
Chandler Madry (SR, Bakersfield, Calif./Faribanks (Alaska) BEST HS) gave the Auggies the early lead with a goal from Alex Rodriguez (SR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS) at the 13:42 mark of the first period. Madry now has seven goals and 19 points on the season, while Rodriguez has 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists), the second-most points among all Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players and tied for ninth-most (13th in points per-game) among all NCAA Division III players nationally.
• The Pointers tied the game 1:50 into the second period, then took the lead with two goals in an eight-second span later in the frame. UW-Stevens Point outshot Augsburg by an 11-5 margin in the second period and 12-6 margin in the third period, en route to a 32-16 advantage in shots on-goal.
• Rodriguez had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Austin Dollimer (FY, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) had two shots each.
Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 29 saves in goal for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Jordan Fader scored from Luke McElhenie at the 1:50 mark of the second period.
• Tanner Karty gave the Pointers the lead with a goal from Zach Zech at the 8:31 mark of the second, followed eight seconds later with a goal from B.J. Duffin, assisted by Steven Quagliata.
• Connor Ryckman had 15 saves in goal for UW-Stevens Point.
