Augsburg suffers first loss in MIAC play

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Matt Nehls (SO, Boulder, Colo./D.C. West HS) scored his first goal of the season with three seconds left in the first period, but it wasn't enough for his Augsburg University men's hockey team, as the Auggies suffered their first defeat in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 loss at Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nehls scored his fourth career goal at the 19:57 mark of the first period, tying the game at 1-1 on assists from Austin Dollimer (FY, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Jason Krych (JR, Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace HS). Nehls is now the 17th different Auggie to score at least one goal this season.
• But the Auggies could not get another score on the board, surrendering goals in the second and third periods. Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 37-33 margin, including a 29-23 margin in the final two periods.
Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, Minn./Fargo North HS) had 34 saves in goal for Augsburg. 
• Lukas Gillett (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) had five shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Luke Dietsch (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Tommy Carey (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) had four shots each.
• Augsburg entered the weekend ranked No. 4 in the latest USCHO.com Division III national poll and No. 5 in the D3hockey.com poll.

FOR THE FOES
• Evan Erickson opened the scoring for the Gusties with a goal at the 7:19 mark of the first period, and Colton Schmidt scored twice for the Gusties to break the deadlock, at the 18:45 mark of the second period and 6:09 mark of the third period.
• Robbie Goor picked up the win in goal for Gustavus with 32 saves.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Olaf. Next Friday's (1/25) game is at 7 p.m. at the new St. Olaf Ice Arena in Northfield, Minn., and next Saturday's (1/26) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
• Gustavus has a MIAC series against Saint Mary's next weekend.
