MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University volleyball team will be embarking upon its third international trip in program history, leaving on Friday for an eight-day competition, training and educational trip to Costa Rica.
The Auggies will depart on Friday to San Jose, Costa Rica's capital city, and return to the Twin Cities on Friday, Jan. 11. Augsburg is scheduled to play two matches during the trip against top Costa Rican club teams, one match in San Carlos and another match in San Jose. The Auggies will also host a pair of volleyball clinics for local youth in the towns of San Carlos and Liberia.
This is the Augsburg volleyball team's third-ever international trip; inÂ
2008, the Auggies traveled to Brazil for a training and competition trip, and in
2015, the Auggies traveled to Nicaragua for a training, competition and educational trip.
During the trip, the Auggies will visit the La Fortuna waterfall, rainforest and natural volcanic hot springs. The Auggies will visit and volunteer on an organic chocolate farm, learning about how climate change has impacted the rainforest and the chocolate growing industry, while also planting trees to offset their carbon footprint. The team will also travel to Playa Tamarindo, on the Pacific Ocean coast, to surf and take part in catamaran sailing.Â
Under ninth-year head coachÂ
Jane Becker, the Augsburg volleyball team finished 22-9 overall in 2018, qualifying for its fourth NCAA Division III national tournament, its third since 2013. Augsburg has recorded 16-plus wins in each of the last 11 seasons, with seven trips to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs in the span.
Updated from the trip will be posted on Augsburg volleyball'sÂ
