Encarnacion's rebound gives Auggies OT victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gabriela Encarnacion (SR, Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS) slid home a rebound on a shot from Natalee Lessert (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) 3:22 into overtime, giving the Augsburg University women's soccer team a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Gustavus 1 (OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-2-0 overall (3-0-0 MIAC), Gustavus 2-7-0 overall (1-3-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Lessert played a short corner kick by Ashley St. Aubin (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS), firing an arcing shot from the left side, 25 yards out. Gustavus goalkeeper Ashley Becker dove to make the save, but the ball popped loose. Three Auggies converged on the ball, and a sliding Encarnacion put a left foot on the ball and sent it to the net for her fifth goal of the season and first game-winner.
• Augsburg rallied to gain the victory, after Gustavus took the lead with a goal at the 57-minute mark. Five-and-a-half minutes after the Gusties scored, the Auggies drew even on St. Aubin's 10th goal of the season and 150th career point. An Encarnacion shot in front was saved, but a Gustavus wide clearing attempt fell to St. Aubin on the left wing, and her rising shot from the mid-left edge of the penalty box found the upper right corner of the net.
• The game was a tight, possession contest through the first half and until Gustavus' goal, after which Augsburg pushed up the offensive pressure on the Gusties. Augsburg held a 55-45 percent advantage in possession, and outshot Gustavus by a 20-8 margin. The Auggies also had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks in the game.
• St. Aubin had six shots in the game, while Encarnacion and Lessert had three shots each.
• Goalkeeper Emily Chapman (SR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) had three saves to claim the win.

FOR THE FOES
• Lauren Johnson put Gustavus in front with a goal at the 57:00 mark, as a clearing attempt popped high in air in the center of the penalty box. Johnson corralled the ball and slammed it home for her first goal of the season.
• Becker had 10 saves in goal for the Gusties.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's career scoring leader, St. Aubin now has 63 career goals and 150 career points (24 assists) in 71 games. St. Aubin has scored at least one goal in 48 games in her career, and the Auggies are now 43-4-1 when she scores a goal. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, St. Aubin is now tied for second in goals this season with 10 and tied for fifth in points with 22.
• St. Aubin is edging closer to the MIAC record for career goals (all games) in women's soccer, 69, set by Macalester's Jenny Scanlon (1991-94). The MIAC's women's soccer career points record is 173 (62 goals, 49 assists), held by Saint Mary's Heidi Campbell (1984-87); St. Aubin's 150 points are now fourth-best in conference history.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Gustavus pushed us tonight. They played hard and their keeper, Ashley Becker, is one of the best in the region. I was proud that we kept our composure and resilience when we got down a goal in the second half. Overall, I'm just proud of the determination we showed. We will need to continue to find deeper levels of perseverance, as St. Catherine is a strong and physical team that will undoubtedly pose a challenge for us on Saturday."
