Playoff hopes take hit with 2-0 loss

MINNEAPOLIS -- Surrendering two goals in the second half, the hopes for a postseason playoff berth for the Augsburg University men's soccer team took a serious hit in a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to Carleton College on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Carleton 2, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-6-3 overall (2-5-1 MIAC), Carleton 12-3-1 overall (5-2-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg had a chance to take an early lead, when a Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) shot glanced off the crossbar in the 13th minute. The shot was the closest scoring opportunity for the Auggies in the first half, in which they were outshot 10-3 by the Knights. Carleton outshot the Auggies by a 20-10 margin in the game.
• Augsburg put four shots on-goal in the second half -- two from Vang and one each from Peyton Boich (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Daniel Hedstrom (SR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), but the Auggies were unable to overcome goals in the 62nd and 80th minutes by the Knights.
• Goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had a season-high eight saves for Augsburg.
• Despite the loss, 21 Auggies, including six first-year players, gained valuable playing time in a challenging contest against a quality opponent.
• Augsburg remains in the hunt for a spot in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs, but it must win its final two games, and have Saint Mary's lose its last two games, and Saint John's lose twice, or lose and draw, in its last two games.

FOR THE FOES
• Tonny Aton scored from Brennan Johnson in the 62nd minute, then assisted on Ben Turner's goal in the 80th minute for the Knights.
• Aaron Forman had four saves in goal for Carleton.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Our program is lucky to have such incredible young men here, and these guys represent the very best of what that means. I am so proud to be able to work with and spend time with them every day. I value that opportunity, and I appreciate how they've helped shape me into a better person."
• "Our soccer was OK tonight. We weren't able to get in on the edges like we'd hoped, but we got better at a lot of what we'd been focusing on in training lately. We had a great chance early in the game from Lionel's service, when Drew went bar-down and Dan couldn't quite get ahold of the rebound to turn and score."
• "Jono Ongeri made his debut tonight, and at one point we had six first-year players out there in the second half. That group created a good chance when Alex Giles just missed after combining through the spine in the 74th minute."
• "We have two more games to go, and whether or not they have any meaning in regard to the postseason is irrelevant to us. We must keep getting better and we must honor the program with our best effort."
