Vang, Hedstrom lift Auggies over Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Two of the senior leaders for the Augsburg University men's soccer team -- Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and Daniel Hedstrom (SR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) -- scored goals to lift the Auggies to a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Concordia College-Moorhead on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Concordia-Moorhead 1
LOCATION: Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex, Moorhead, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-6-3 overall (3-5-1 MIAC), Concordia 8-7-2 overall (2-7-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Vang gave the Auggies the lead with his team-high ninth goal of the season, an unassisted marker in the 13th minute, maneuvering through defenders and putting home a shot from the right side.
• Concordia tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 66th minute, but Augsburg got the lead back with 4:48 left in regulation time, as Hedstrom scored his fourth goal of the season, heading home a service from Antonio Magadan (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS).
• The Auggies and Cobbers both had 11 shots in the game. Vang had four shots, including three on-target for the Auggies, while Hedstrom and Lalo Gomez (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had two shots apiece.
• Making just his sixth appearance in goal and first since Sept. 28, Zachary Berg (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Farmington HS) was effective in goal, claiming three saves to pick up the win.
• Despite the victory, Augsburg was eliminated from contention for a berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs on Wednesday, after Saint John's claimed a 2-1 win over Bethel.

FOR THE FOES
• Sondre Rygg scored in the 66th minute for Concordia, assisted by Casey Haldis and Sam Gess.
• Noah Sahr had three saves in goal for the Cobbers.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It looks as though we are going to end our season the way we started it ,with Lionel doing the unthinkable on his own and Dan scoring from some sort of dead-ball moment. It was a tough game today -- long drive, really cold, and we knew we were essentially out of the playoff race. That being said, the guys represented the program as expected -- with a good work rate, quality soccer, resiliency, and a sense of togetherness."
• "Lionel showed us why he is so special when he beat 4-5 Cobbers on his own before slamming it in from a tight angle. For me, he's the best in the league. I have my fingers crossed our team record won't hold him back from the proper recognition at the end of the season, but it certainly could."
• "We were pretty open in the back after about 30 minutes of the game and Concordia had their chances, for sure. When we got to 1-1, I was anticipating another overtime game, and then Antonio Magadan served a perfect ball into a dangerous space where Dan had shaken his mark for a free header down into the corner. It was a really good goal."
• "Jono Ongeri was a beast today, making his first start after debuting for 10 minutes against Carleton on Saturday. With Hsinku hurt and Vergara not up to his normal standard, Jono made the most of the opportunity. He was outstanding -- and so was Herbert Carrera on the other side. We played three true first-years across the backline today, with Drew Collins at center-back, and they were all up to the task."
• "I also thought Peyton Boich was outstanding as our No. 6. He connects everything for us in possession and reads the game and the opponent so well defensively. He accumulates interceptions and important defensive interventions that give us an edge. He's been really good of late."
