Volleyball secures MIAC playoff berth in win over Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The No. 13-ranked Augsburg University volleyball team qualified for Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs for the seventh straight year, rallying from a two-set deficit to claim a dramatic five-set victory at Bethel University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS 
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. Bethel 3-2 (26-28, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-11)
LOCATION: Robertson Center Gym, Arden Hills, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 21-4 overall (7-2 MIAC), Bethel 15-10 overall (4-5 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Augsburg dropped the first two sets to the host Royals before coming back strong to win the next final three sets and the match. The Auggies had 10 team blocks in the match, the 14th time this season earning 10 or more team blocks. 
• Pacing the Augsburg offense was Corrina Evans (JR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) with 16 kills, and Megan Quam (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) with 13 kills. Evans' 16 kills tied her season-best kill effort, and was the fourth match in a row and 11th match this season that she has had 10 or more kills. Evans also had six blocks (three solo) and five digs. Quam added six digs, three block assists and two assists. 
Maddie Nierengarten (JR, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) finished with nine kills, seven digs and three block assists. Also finishing with three block assists was Jade Fullerton (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), who added eight kills, four digs and two assists. 
• Playing in only three out of five sets, Kayla Gjerde (SO, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) collected eight kills for the Auggies, hitting at a team-best .353 clip.  
• Lexie Lang (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) set her career-best assist mark with 41, while adding six kills, two service aces and a block assist. 
• Fellow setter Izzy Barr (SO, River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) finished with 14 assists, two service aces and a block assist. Katie O'Rourke (FY, Columbia Heights, Minn./Irondale HS) earned seven kills, five digs and an ace. 
• Five Auggies finished with double-digit digs, with Jaelin Rios (SR, Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) leading the charge with 18. The others were Lang (15), Barr (13), Gjerde (10), and Angel Khang (FY, North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul HS) also with 10. 

FOR THE FOES
• The Royal offense was led by Macie Gavic and Maria Claflin, who had 15 and 13 kills respectively. 
• Hannah Wilhite earned 30 assists, while Allie Fauth had match-best 24 digs.
