TUCSON, Ariz. -- Behind a pair of impressive pitching performances by
Sam Anderson (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS), the Augsburg University softball team scored two victories on Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational Games at Lincoln Park.

DOUBLEHEADER HIGHLIGHTS
• Pitching 11 of the 14 innings on the day, Anderson struck out 17 while walking just one and allowing just seven hits and one unearned run in the doubleheader. Already Augsburg's career record-holder for strikeouts with 462, Anderson has 55 strikeouts this season,
third-best among MIAC pitchers in overall statistics.
• Anderson also helped her cause at the plate in the doubleheader, with four hits in six at-bats, including a solo home run against Edgewood and a double against UW-Eau Claire, scoring three runs and driving in three.
•
Anesia King (JR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) also went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, scoring two runs and hitting a triple.
EDGEWOOD HIGHLIGHTS
• Anderson allowed just one hit in four innings of work against the Eagles, striking out nine while walking one.
Bella Kallas (SO, Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) pitched three innings of solid relief, with a strikeout against a walk and just three hits.
• King led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple, which started a 10-batter, five-run, six-hit inning for the Auggies. Anderson drove in King on a single,
Mackenzie Evenson (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit a two-run double and
Nell Gehrke (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) hit a two-run single to cap the inning.
•
Sarah Garcia (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) hit a bunt single and eventually came around to score on a throwing error in the second inning, and Anderson's solo homer to lead off the sixth inning rounded out the scoring for the Auggies.
• King went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Anderson, Gehrke and
Shannon Dale (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) had two hits each.
UW-LA CROSSE HIGHLIGHTS
• The game turned out to be a pitchers' duel between Augsburg's Anderson and UW-La Crosse's Maddie Muelken, who battled each other inning for inning in complete-game efforts. Anderson struck out eight while not walking a batter and allowing just six hits and a uneared run, while Muelken had seven strikeouts against one walk and four hits.
• The Auggies struck first, when King reached second base on a dropped fly ball, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Anderson. But UW-La Crosse tied the game in the fifth, when Mia Schmidtke hit a double and later came around to score following a throwing error.
• But the Auggies went ahead in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Anderson hit a double to the left-center gap, and
Jacquline Nichols (SR, Royalton, Minn./Royalton HS) followed with her second home run of the season, a shot to right-center. The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but a fly out ended the game.
