Auggie baseball splits with Marian in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Augsburg University and Marian University baseball teams each gained shutout wins on Thursday, splitting a doubleheader at the Tucson Invitational Games at the Kino Sports Complex.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg managed just two hits against Marian pitcher Jordan Bock, who struck out nine while not walking a batter in a complete-game victory.
Troy Ouellette (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led off the game with a single in the first inning, and Ryan Masui (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) had a single in the fifth.
• Augsburg starter Mathew Nicklay (SO, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) struck out five while walking two and allowing five hits in five innings of work, with Paul Girard (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata HS) striking out one in an inning of relief.
• The Sabres scored in the second inning on an RBI double by Nick Dugandzic, and in the third on an RBI single by Nick Bastien.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Making his second start of the Arizona trip, pitcher Jacob Kraft (SR, Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) threw a complete-game gem, striking out four against no walks and just five singles. Marian had just one runner reach as far as third base in the game.
• Augsburg scored twice in the third inning. Paulson reached base on a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by Chris Steinhoff (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and scored on a single by Mike Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS). A bases-loaded walk later drove home Steinhoff.
• In the sixth, Dylan Foote (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a single by Paulson, and scored on a single by Kyle Hoppe (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS).
• Hoppe and Clayton Bodine (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had two hits each for the Auggies in the second game, while Josh Gates had two hits for Marian.
