Auggies gain MIAC split against Knights

MINNEAPOLIS -- Clayton Bodine (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had four hits in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-3 effort in the opener, as his Augsburg University baseball team scored a split with Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Augsburg 3, Carleton 1; Carleton 4, Augsburg 2
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 7-16 overall (3-7 MIAC), Carleton 7-11 overall (4-4 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies took advantage of another brilliant complete-game pitching performance from senior Jamie Kaye (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who struck out six while not walking a batter and allowing just five hits to improve to 4-2 on the season. Of his 92 pitches, 64 were strikes in the seven-inning victory.
• Augsburg used a three-run fourth inning to take control of the game. Four straight singles -- by Daniel Phyle (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount HS), Kyle Hoppe (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS), Mike Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) and Bodine -- plated the first two runs, and a sacrifice fly by Donovan Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) drove home the third run.
• Brookshaw went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the first game, part of a 10-hit -- all singles -- Augsburg output.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg rallied from an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead after six innings, but Carleton scored a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the victory.
• An RBI double by Joe Rydel (SR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) drove home Tomony with a run in the fourth inning, and Brookshaw scored on an RBI single by Travis Schmidt (JR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) in the sixth.
• Two of the three Carleton runs allowed in the late-inning rally were unearned, as the Knights took advantage of three Augsburg errors.
• Matthew Nicklay (SO, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) struck out two against no walks in six innings on the mound for the Auggies, with Joey Tschida (JR, Lakeville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) and Paul Girard (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata HS) pitching in relief.
