Shutouts squelch Auggie pitching efforts

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Despite outstanding pitching efforts by Charles Linder (SR, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) and Dylan Irving (FY, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) -- only giving up three runs and 10 hits combined in both games -- the Augsburg University baseball team was handed two shutout losses by Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Thursday.

LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 7-18 overall (3-9 MIAC), Bethel 14-11 overall (6-6 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Linder pitched his first complete game of the season, giving up one run on only four hits, striking out five and allowing no walks in the nine-inning game. Of his 100 pitches, 70 were strikes. 
• Augsburg's bats were quiet, claiming only two hits -- singles by Kyle Hoppe (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) and Mike Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS). 
• The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth-inning, when the Royals took advantage of an Augsburg error, scoring the eventual game-winning run. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• As in the first game, Augsburg was only able to produce two hits in the seven-inning nightcap. Brookshaw hit his second single of the night, while Dylan Foote (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) also singled. 
• Irving struck out six against three walks, allowing two runs on six hits, in the 6.2 innings on the mound for the Auggies, with Darius Uditsky (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Family HS) pitching in relief. 
• Bethel scored one run in the third inning and another in the seventh, to secure the road sweep. 

FOR THE FOES 
• Pitchers Marcus Krupke and Michael Bohlke both earned shutout victories on the mound for the Royals, striking out eight batters each. 
• Mitch Butvilas had one hit and one run in the first game.
• Sam Horner went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the second game, hitting a single and a double.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Macalester College on Friday (4/19) at 4 p.m. (note earlier start time) for a single nonconference game at Parade Stadium.
• Bethel hosts the University of Northwestern-St. Paul for a doubleheader on Monday (4/22) at 1 p.m.
