Nelson sets draw control record in Auggie victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Christina Nelson (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) shattered Augsburg University's single-game record for draw controls, collecting 15 as part of an outstanding all-around performance, leading her Auggies to a 21-10 victory over Benedictine University in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference action on Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nelson's skill at establishing possession via the draw control helped to spark an Augsburg rally in the second half. Augsburg claimed 10 draw controls to Benedictine's four in the second half, enabling the Auggies to pull away from what was a close 10-7 halftime advantage with an 11-3 second-half goal surge. Augsburg had 19 draw controls to Benedictine's 13 in the game -- with Nelson's 15 breaking the old Augsburg record of 13, set by Delaney Everett in a 2017 game.
• In addition to her 15 draw controls, Nelson also scored a goal with an assist, adding five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game.
• Mikayla Jones (JR, Oak Park Heights, Minn./B.E. Emerson Prep HS) recorded her third game with five or more points this season, with four goals and two assists for a six-point morning. She also had two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
• Annika Hegrenes (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) also had an outstanding all-around performance, scoring three goals with four ground balls, a draw control and a career-high-tying five caused turnovers.
• Allie Tuccitto (SO, Rosemount, Minn./Eastview HS) scored three goals with three ground balls and a caused turnover, and Megan Furlong (SO, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) scored three goals with a ground ball and caused turnover.
• Mikayla Knudson (JR, Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) scored two goals with five ground balls and five caused turonvers, while Demey Everett (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored two goals with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Tehya Reinbold (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored two goals with a caused turnover and ground ball.
• McKenna Ellena (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored a goal with an assist, adding three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Hannah Valen (JR, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) and Kassie Diaz (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had two caused turnovers and a ground ball.each.
• Goalie Maddie Seykora (SO, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) recorded 15 saves -- her eighth double-digit save performance of the season, to go along with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
• Augsburg outshot Benedictine by a 45-27 margin in the game, tied for the third-most shots in a single game in Augsburg history.The Auggies had 38 ground balls to the Eagles' 25, and converted 20-of-28 clearing attempts, compared to Benedictine's 13-of-32, Augsburg's 38 ground balls are its second-most in a game in program history.

FOR THE FOES
• Benedictine was paced by Madison Horan, who scored three goals with an assist, adding five draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
• Amaris Hernandez had 13 saves and two ground balls in goal for the Eagles.
