Auggies remain in MWLC playoff hunt with key victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- With nine different players scoring goals in a balanced attack, the Augsburg University women's lacrosse team remained in the hunt for a spot in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference postseason playoffs with a 20-11 win over Loras College on Tuesday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 20, Loras (Iowa) 11
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-6 overall (9-3 MWLC), Loras 7-7 overall (4-7 MWLC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A four-goal scoring run in a five-minute span late in the first half gave the Auggies a 9-4 lead, an advantage eventually expanded to 11-6 at halftime. The Auggies' lead did not dip below four goals the rest of the way.
Annika Hegrenes (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) led the Auggies with a career-high five-goal performance, scoring twice in the first half and three times in the second half, with two goals coming on free-position attempts. The midfielder added four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers in a solid all-around performance.
• Defender/midfielder Christina Nelson (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) claimed her sixth double-digit draw-control effort of the season, with 12 draw controls to go along with two goals, an assist, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Nelson now leads all MWLC players with 107 draw controls, just four away from her single-season school record of 111, set last year.
Mikayla Knudson (JR, Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) scored three goals with an assist for a four-point day, her eighth multi-point game of the season. She added three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Mikayla Jones (JR, Oak Park Heights, Minn./B.E. Emerson Prep HS) scored three goals with three ground balls and two draw controls, while Allie Tuccitto (SO, Rosemount, Minn./Eastview HS) scored two goals with two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Megan Furlong (SO, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) scored two goals with two ground balls.
McKenna Ellena (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored a goal with an assist, to go along with three draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover, and Hannah Mincy (FY, Des Moines, Iowa/Urbandale HS) had a goal and an assist. Tehya Reinbold (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored a goal with a draw control.
• On defense, Demey Everett (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Champlin Park HS) claimed five ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Kassie Diaz (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, and Hannah Valen (JR, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) and one ground ball and one caused turnover.
• Goalie Maddie Seykora (SO, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) recorded 16 saves -- her ninth double-digit save performance of the season, to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Seykora's 164 saves and .527 save percentage are both third-best among MWLC goalies.
• Augsburg outshot Loras by a 45-30 margin, had a 22-11 advantage in draw controls and a 32-22 advantage in ground balls. The Auggies converted 21-of-25 clearing attempts, compared to 19-of-32 for the Duhawks.

FOR THE FOES
• Three Duhawks scored three goals each -- Clare Brunn, Renata Veljacic and Olivia Flynn. Flynn had seven draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Veljacic had three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.
• Loras goalie Rebecca Hiebing had 15 saves.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win, Augsburg remains alive for a spot in the four-team MWLC postseason playoffs, entering the final weekend of the regular season. Augsburg has one league game remaining, while the two teams ahead of the Auggies in the standings, Illinois Tech (9-4 overall, 9-2 MWLC) and Concordia-Wisconsin (9-6 overall, 9-2 MWLC), both have two league games left. Hamline (14-1 overall, 11-0 MWLC) and Aurora (Ill., 11-5 overall, 10-2 MWLC) lead the MWLC standings.
• Illinois Tech beat both Augsburg and Concordia-Wisconsin in their head-to-head meetings this season, which will likely make Saturday's (4/27) Augsburg-at-Concordia-Wisconsin game a winner-take-all contest for the final MWLC playoff berth. Concordia-Wisconsin finishes its regular season with a game at Hamline on Sunday (4/28).

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday (4/27) at 11 a.m.
• Loras hosts Illinois Tech on Wednesday (4/24) at 7 p.m.
