Auggies clinch playoff berth with amazing comeback

MEQUON, Wis. -- In one of the most incredible comebacks in the six-year history of the program, the Augsburg University women's lacrosse team rallied from a 6-0 game-opening deficit to clinch a berth in the four-team Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference postseason playoffs for the fourth straight year, scoring a 13-11 victory at Concordia University-Wisconsin on Saturday morning.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 13, Concordia-Wisconsin 11
LOCATION: Fitting Field, Mequon, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 10-6 overall (10-3 MWLC), Concordia-Wisconsin 9-7 overall (9-3 MWLC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg surrendered the first six goals of the opening 8:35 of play, but scored three straight goals to trail 6-3 at halftime. The Auggies cut the lead to two goals twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Falcons answered with two goals of their own both times, taking a 10-6 lead with 16:55 left. Augsburg then scored seven of the final eight goals of the game -- two goals each from Mikayla Jones (JR, Oak Park Heights, Minn./B.E. Emerson Prep HS), Mikayla Knudson (JR, Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) and Allie Tuccitto (SO, Rosemount, Minn./Eastview HS), and one from Megan Furlong (SO, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) -- to steal the huge road victory.
• The Auggies tied the game at 10-10 with a four-goal run in a 2:31 span, with Jones scoring two goals and Furlong and Knudson scoring. After Concordia took an 11-10 lead with 9:42 left, the Auggies tied the game just 18 seconds later, as Tuccitto scored on a break following a draw control by Christina Nelson (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), with an assist by Jones.
• The Auggies took the lead for the first time in the game with 2:35 left to play, with Knudson scoring an unassisted goal, then added a crucial insurance goal just 13 seconds later, after McKenna Ellena (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) claimed a draw control and fed Tuccitto for a breakaway score.
• One of the keys to the victory was possession gained by draw controls, as Augsburg claimed 18 draws compared to Concordia's six -- including a 10-5 advantage during the second-half comeback. Nelson, the MWLC's leader in draw controls with a single-season school-record 122, tied her single-game school record (set earlier this year) with 15 draw controls, while adding six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Her 45 caused turnovers are tied for fourth-most in the MWLC, while her 52 ground balls are tied for 10th-most. Nelson holds Augsburg's career records for draw controls (279), ground balls (196) and caused turnovers (174).
• Jones led the way for the Auggies with four goals and an assist for a five-point morning, her ninth multi-goal game of the season and sixth game with three or more points this year. She scored two goals on three free-position attempts.
• Tuccitto scored three goals with two assists for her 11th multi-goal game and ninth game with three or more points this season. She leads the Auggies in all three scoring categories, with 37 goals and 11 assists for 48 points.
• Knudson and Furlong scored two goals each, with Knudson adding a ground ball. Hannah Mincy (FY, Des Moines, Iowa/Urbandale HS) scored a goal with a caused turnover and ground ball, and Annika Hegrenes (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) also scored a goal.
• On defense, Ellena had four caused turnovers, four ground balls and three draw controls, Tehya Reinbold (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Kassie Diaz (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had two caused turnovers.
scored a goal with a draw control.
• In goal, Maddie Seykora (SO, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) had another outstanding performance, collecting 10 saves -- her 10th double-digit save performance of the season, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Seykora's 174 saves and .524 save percentage are both second-best among MWLC goalies, while her 63 ground balls are fourth-most among league players.
• Augsburg claimed the win despite committing 32 turnovers -- but only 12 in the second half. The Auggies outshot Concordia by a 31-29 margin, while Concordia had 26 ground balls to Augsburg 23. Augsburg converted 20-of-30 clearing attempts, compared to 24-of-30 for Concordia.

FOR THE FOES
• Kristen Kennedy scored three goals with three caused turnovers and three ground balls for Concordia-Wisconsin, while Lauren Paquin and Megan McPike had two goals with an assist each. Paquin had five caused turnovers, four ground balls and three draw controls, and McPike had three ground balls with a draw control. Ellie Woodman scored two goals with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
• Kinsey Weyer had 11 saves in goal for the Falcons.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
