Penalty kicks decide Augsburg season-opening draw

TACOMA, Wash. -- With the only goals of the game a pair of penalty-kick goals 22 seconds apart early in the second half, the Augsburg University men's soccer team opened its 2019 campaign with a 1-1 tie in two overtimes with the University of Puget Sound on Friday evening at Baker Stadium.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Puget Sound (Wash.) 1 (2OT)
LOCATION: Baker Stadium, Tacoma, Wash.
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-0-1 overall, Puget Sound 0-0-1 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Three minutes into the second half, Augsburg earned a penalty kick, and Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) converted with a shot to the top right corner, scoring his fourth career penalty kick goal. The goal is the 18th of Vang's career.
• Puget Sound outshot Augsburg by a 21-13 margin in the game, including a 14-8 advantage in the second half. But goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) was up to the task for the Auggies, only surrendering a penalty kick goal just 22 seconds after Vang's marker. He had eight saves in the game, including one save in the second overtime.
• Vang had five of Augsburg's 13 shots in the game, including three on-target. Peyton Boich (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Henry Aryiku (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had two shots each.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "This was a perfect first game for us. We went on the road, dealing with a two-hour time change and a different surface,  and got out of there with a really good point against one of the top teams in the West Region. We had to play 21 different guys because we just aren't yet fit for a full match, and a double-overtime game will help with that. A 12-day preseason is not enough to get anyone ready, and we were up against a Puget Sound side that has been training for four weeks and played several games thanks to an International trip earlier in August. That's a great experience for those guys, and gives them more time to prepare for the start of the season."
• "The first half was dead even, and fatigue contributed to the opportunities for Puget Sound in the second half. That being said, we defended the goal line with real grit and intentionality. We were not going to give one up - the guys battled so hard to hang on even when they were absolutely out of juice."
• "Puget Sound had a plan, and it opened the game up a bit which added miles to our guys' legs. We finished the game and OT without Hedstrom, Sullivan, and Vergara, which makes the point even more impressive. First-Years Drew Collins and Spencer Enright got thrown to the wolves and handled it extremely well. Sophomore transfer Alex Giles filled in at left back to close out the game after playing as a No. 10 in the first half."
• "We had a few quality chances to score when Giles missed a 1-v-1 with their goalkeeper over the top in the dying minutes of the first half, and when Miguel Tejeda slammed one bar-down to start the second half. Miggy looked the part tonight -- we are all excited about him."
• "Garrett was great defending the goal, and as the game wore on, his decisions with the ball improved, really helping the team. I would say that the standout player for me, though, was Lionel. He was impossible to deal with and beyond his soccer, he was a great leader and motivator. It's incredible to watch these guys mature during their careers, and I am as excited about Lio as I have been about any player we've ever had here. He's just so good and so fun to work with.
• "Saturday will be a recovery day with some more player-cooked team meals and a little time in the lake. We will do our best to find our legs for Sunday morning's game with another challenging opponent in Pacific Lutheran. They were in the NCAA Tournament last fall, and are picked to finish second in the Northwest Conference this season. It will be another test of our resiliency and depth."

FOR THE FOES
• Luke Murdock scored a penalty-kick goal for Puget Sound at the 48:23 mark.
• Ethan Stern-Ellis had five saves in goal for the Loggers.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg finishes its trip to Tacoma, Wash., on Sunday (9/1) at 1 p.m., with a game at Pacific Lutheran. The Lutes, like Augsburg, were an NCAA Division III national tournament team last season, finishing 13-6-2 overall.
