Augsburg drops conference opener at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Nick Zuchowski (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored for Augsburg University in the 70th minute, but three first-half goals by Macalester College gave the Scots the cushion they would need in a 4-1 victory, in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Macalester 4, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Macalester Stadium, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-2-1 overall (0-1-0 MIAC), Macalester 3-2-3 overall (1-0-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Macalester struck quickly in each period, scoring its first goal 73 seconds into the game and its final goal 26 seconds into the second half. The Scots scored three goals in the opening 38 minutes of play, outshooting the Auggies by a 16-13 margin in the game.
• Augsburg's lone goal came at the 69:44 mark, when Zuchowski scored on a shot to the low left side, assisted by David Saly (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Nick Vergara (JR, Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS).
• Augsburg was forced to play with 10 players for the final three-quarters of the game, after a straight red-card ejection in the 23rd minute. Augsburg used 24 players in the contest, with Zuchowski recording four shots, Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) claiming three shots and Lalo Gomez (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) claiming two shots.
Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had three saves in the first half for the Auggies, while Zachary Berg (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Farmington HS) had two saves in the second half in relief.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We need to resolve our poor starts, as that is now two in a row where we've given up goals in the first three or four minutes of the game. I would say that set the tone prior to the red card destroying the game. I was really proud of our guys and how we played despite being a man down for 70 minutes. Losing our All-American centerback on a decision like that was tough for the group, but it allowed us to set new goals for the game and get a lot of players some experience under tough circumstances."
• "We all accept responsibility for poor preparation ahead of the match, and that starts with me and our staff. We just weren't good enough and that put the guys in a tough position. It's on us, but like anything else in this program, we are accountable for those mistakes and will rectify them as fast as we can. We all need to be resilient and bounce back, because in this amazing league, there isn't any time to feel sorry for oneself."

FOR THE FOES
• Nick Moore, Danny Peak, Will Orser and Chris Bajek scored goals for Macalester, with Omar Anwar and Jack Muller recording assists.
• Cade Fink had three saves in goal for the Scots.
