Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer edged in overtime by Tommies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) tied the game with a set-piece goal in the 78th minute for Augsburg University, but the University of St. Thomas scored the victory with a goal 1:17 into the first overtime in a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer contest on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Thomas 2, Augsburg 1 (OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-3-1 overall (0-2-0 MIAC), St. Thomas 2-3-3 overall (1-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Thomas took the lead with a goal in the 22nd minute and outshot Augsburg by a 9-2 margin in the first half. Vang had a shot to tie the game in the 29th minute, but his bicycle-kick shot in front hit the crossbar.
• In the second half, Augsburg rallied back to tie the game with 12:34 remaining. On a corner kick from Antonio Magadan (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), Vang corralled the ball in front of the right post and deposited the ball in the net for his fourth goal of the season.
• The Auggies had a chance to take the lead with 8:26 left in regulation, when Vang was fouled by the St. Thomas goalkeeper on a breakaway just outside the penalty box, resulting in a straight red-card ejection. Vang's free kick was initially blocked by the St. Thomas wall, and his rebound shot went just wide of the net.
• St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 17-7 margin in the game, but Augsburg did hold a 55-45 percent advantage in possession time. The game was a physical affair, with the teams combining for 29 fouls -- 16 against St. Thomas, 13 against Augsburg.
• Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had five saves in goal for the Auggies.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Classic MIAC game with St. Thomas. These are so fun to be a part of even if we came out on the short end tonight. They scored on a set piece and long throw, and unfortunately, we didn't have our All-American centerback (Daniel Hedstrom) able to help us with those. We knew the Tommies were a threat in those moments, and they did what they needed to do to get the points."
• "That being said, I thought we got better tonight. We progressed as the game wore on and a few individuals really had impressive performances. Drew Collins is a stud. He filled in for Dan tonight, but has shown in the last two games that he is ready to play now. Helio De La Torre made his debut tonight and he was impactful. His header set up one of our better chances on the night, but we just couldn't poke it home."
• "Herbert Carrera was outstanding and Lalo Gomez was really good -- he changed the game for us when he entered, shoring up our defense. And then there is Lionel. I haven't seen a better player this year. He is outstanding and continues to lead both on and off the field."
• "We may have had a rough run in regard to results, but this group is growing every day and moving forward positively. I am super excited to get to training on Monday, because I know what kind of level of resilience and commitment these guys have."

FOR THE FOES
• Halvor Houg scored the game-winning goal for St. Thomas at the 1:17 mark of the first overtime, on an assist from Michael Arrell.
• Jonathan Acevedo opened the game with a goal at the 21:02 mark, scoring on a scramble in front following a blocked free kick by George Marty.
• Starting goalkeeper Sean Teske played 81 minutes, and reliever Troy Louwagie had one save in 10 minutes of relief.
