St. Aubin extends streak to 10 games in big win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring her ninth goal of the season in the 13th minute, Augsburg University's Ashley St. Aubin (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) extended her goal-scoring streak to 10 straight games, the lone goal in the Auggies' 1-0 win over the No. 12-ranked University of St. Thomas in a key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, St. Thomas 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-2-0 overall (1-0-0 MIAC), St. Thomas 5-2-0 overall (1-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Aubin stole the ball at midfield, sprinted forward 40 yards down the left side, and slotted the ball across the box to the low right corner for her ninth goal of the season, the only goal of an evenly-played match between the two teams that met in last year's MIAC playoff title game. The goal was just the fifth surrendered by a St. Thomas team that has outscored its opponents by a 15-5 margin so far this season.
• After St. Aubin's goal, the game turned into a defensive battle, with the teams battling for possession and shot opportunities. Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by an 8-4 margin in the first half, but St. Thomas held a 13-5 shot advantage in the second half, for a 17-13 overall advantage in the game. St. Thomas held a 54-46 percent possession advantage in the contest, and had seven corner kicks to Augsburg's five.
• Seven Auggies played the full 90 minutes in the contest, including the defensive foursome of Claire Popp (JR, New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower HS), Molly Conners (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Jen Masello (SO, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and Rachel Montgomery (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), flanking goalkeeper Emily Chapman (SR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS). St. Aubin and midfielder Callie Athey (JR, Eagan, Minn./Burnsville HS) also played the full 90 minutes.
• Chapman recorded six saves in goal to claim her third shutout of the season and 17th of her career.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win over St. Thomas, ranked No. 12 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, it's the second time Augsburg has beaten a team ranked in the top 20 this season; the Auggies topped then-No. 19 Loras (Iowa) 4-2 in a nonconference game on Sept. 15.
• St. Aubin has 12 goals and four assists for 28 points in her 10-game scoring stretch, including nine goals and two assists for 20 points this season. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, St. Aubin is tied for third in goals and fourth in points. Her goal-scoring streak is the second-longest of her career, behind an 11-game scoring streak last season.
• Augsburg's career scoring leader, St. Aubin now has 62 career goals and 148 career points (24 assists) in 69 games. St. Aubin has scored at least one goal in 47 games in her career, and the Auggies are now 42-4-1 when she scores a goal.
• The fourth player in MIAC women's soccer history to reach the 60-goal career-scoring plateau, St. Aubin is edging closer to the MIAC record for career goals (all games) in women's soccer, 69, set by Macalester's Jenny Scanlon (1991-94). The MIAC's women's soccer career points record is 173 (62 goals, 49 assists), held by Saint Mary's Heidi Campbell (1984-87); St. Aubin's 148 points are now fifth-best in conference history.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "I thought it was a great game between two outstanding teams. Ashley showed why she's an All-American with a brilliant goal, and we stayed strong defensively throughout the game. We take a lot of pride in the history of our program. It's always been a 'players program,' in that the players empower and support each other and ultimately take ownership of our team. We challenged the players to work harder for each other, and they definitely did that tonight. While it is a great result, we have a deep and talented league, and we will be tested again on Saturday when we head down to Winona to play Saint Mary's."

FOR THE FOES
• Sarah Pasternak had three saves in goal for St. Thomas.
• Paige Carter had five shots in the game for the Tommies.
