FINAL SCORE: St. Olaf 48, Augsburg 26
LOCATION:Â Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS:Â Augsburg 1-3Â overall (0-2 MIAC), St. Olaf 4-0 overall (2-0 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Olaf scored the first 28 points of the game, taking advantage of Augsburg drives that ended with four punts, a blocked field goal attempt and two fumbles, including one that extended a St. Olaf drive that resulted in the first Ole touchdown in the first quarter. St. Olaf outgained Augsburg by a 314-136 margin in the first half, en route to a 469-343 advantage in the game.
• Augsburg didn't score until its final drive of the first half, following a 69-yard kickoff return by
Le'Andre Benion (SR, Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS). Quarterback
Quinn Frisell (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), returning to the starting lineup after missing a game-and-a-half due to injury, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to
Andrew Williams (JR, Milpitas, Calif./Milpitas HS) with 26 seconds left in the first half.Â
• The Auggies scored three times in the second half, with Frisell throwing two third-quarter touchdown passes -- a 13-yarder to
Mike Rodriguez (JR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and a nine-yarder to Benion. The Benion touchdown followed a successful onside kick, recovered by Williams on the St. Olaf 45-yard line.
• On a running play, Frisell suffered an injury on a tackle and was knocked from the game early in the fourth quarter. His replacement,Â
Chad Costello (JR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), continued the Auggie drive and completed a 20-yard touchdown pass toÂ
Josiah Ferguson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), and a two-point conversion pass to Benion, to cut the Ole lead to 42-26 with 9:34 left to play. But the Oles got one more touchdown in the final two minutes of play to cap the scoring.
