Auggies suffer on special teams in loss to Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. -- Surrendering three power-play goals in a 1:55 span in the third period and two shorthanded goals in the second period, the Augsburg University men's hockey team suffered a 7-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at Saint Mary's University on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg was scoreless on five power-play opportunities in the game, and gave up two shorthanded goals in the second period. On a five-minute major penalty in the third period, the Cardinals scored three goals in a 1:55 span to blow open the game.
• Augsburg's lone goal came at the 17:28 mark of the third period, as Austin Martinsen (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) slid a pass across the slot and found Gavin Holland (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) for a one-timer from the left side. Tommy Carey (JR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) had the second assist on the goal.
• Saint Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 28-24 margin in the game.
• Daniil Gerasimov (JR, Moscow, Russia/State School 1944) had 19 saves in goal for the Auggies, with Jon Albers (JR, Blaine, Minn./Centennial HS) collecting two saves in five minutes of relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Tommy Stang scored two shorthanded goals for the Cardinals in the second period, and assisted on two more goals in a four-point effort. Tyson Liverance scored a goal with two assists, and Kyle Meeh, Trevor Wilhelm, Ryan Stoynich and Brady Lindauer also scored goals. Jack Stang had three assists.
• Nick Nast stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced to pick up the victory in goal.
