Auggies advance to MIAC title game with OT win

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg University women's hockey team advanced to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship game in dramatic fashion, as Mikayla Jones (SR, Oak Park Heights, Minn./B.E. Emerson Prep HS) scored her second goal of the game 7:55 into overtime, lifting the Auggies to a 2-1 win at Hamline University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Hamline 1 (OT)
LOCATION: TRIA Rink, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 21-5-0 overall, Hamline 18-4-4 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Off a faceoff win by Jones, Kalli Prekker (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) fired a shot on-goal from the right point, and Jones pounced on the loose puck in front and put a backhand shot in the net for her 11th goal of the season and 28th of her 101-game college career.
• Jones tied the game at 1-1 at the 1:24 mark of the second period, as she took a cross-ice pass from McKenna Ellena (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and sprinted up the right wing to the net, firing a wrister to the top shelf for the goal. Nikki Nightengale (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had the second assist on the goal.
• Augsburg held a 23-22 advantage in shots on-goal in the game, including a 4-2 advantage in overtime.
Abby Bollig (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) improved to 12-1-0 on the season with the win in goal, collecting 21 saves.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Competing in its fifth MIAC postseason tournament in a row, Augsburg will advance to the conference title game next Saturday (3/7) at 2 p.m. at regular-season champion Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties scored a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's in the other MIAC semifinal game on Saturday. Competing in its ninth conference playoff tournament in school history, Augsburg is now 7-7-0 all-time in the MIAC playoffs.
• Augsburg's 21 wins have tied its school record for single-season wins in years where all its opponents were on the varsity level (since 1998-99). Augsburg went 21-7-1 in the 1999-2000 campaign. The Auggies went 22-8-2 in the program's second season, 1996-97, but just four games were against varsity opponents (2-2-0), with the remainder against club-level competition.
• Augsburg topped No. 8-ranked Hamline twice in the teams' three meetings this year -- including both games played at TRIA Rink.
• Augsburg has now won 18 of its last 20 overall contests and 11 games in a row.

FOR THE FOES
• Bre Simon gave the Pipers the early lead with an unassisted goal 3:24 into the game.
• McKenna Hulslander had 21 saves in goal for Hamline.
