Sheehan, Smith tie school records in Auggie win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Quarterback Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and wide receiver Dominic Smith (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) each tied single-game school records, as their Augsburg University football team topped the 50-point mark for the second straight week, in a 56-28 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over St. Olaf College on Homecoming Saturday at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 56, St. Olaf 28
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-2 overall (2-0 MIAC), St. Olaf 2-2 overall (1-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sheehan completed 35-of-51 passes for 405 yards and six touchdowns against no interceptions. His six-touchdown effort tied Augsburg's single-game school record -- first set by his Auggie coach, Derrin Lamker, in a 1997 game against St. Olaf.
• Smith tied an Augsburg single-game school record for touchdown receptions with four, catching second-quarter scores of 31 and 23 yards, a third-quarter score of 10 yards and a fourth-quarter score of 16 yards. He caught 10 passes for 136 yards in the game. His four touchdown receptions ties a school record set five times before -- Karl Sneider in 1966, Scott Hvistendahl in 1998, Mark Johnson in 2001, Ben Bothun in 2004 and Nick Heenie in 2018.
• Augsburg eclipsed the 500-yard mark of total offense for the second straight week, reaching 500 total yards (405 passing, 95 rushing). Augsburg averaged 5.1 yards per-play on its 99 offensive plays. Meanwhile, the Auggie defense held St. Olaf to 340 total yards (285 passing, 55 rushing) on 51 plays.
• Augsburg jumped out to a 13-0 lead, capping a nine-play, 63-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sheehan to Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) in the first quarter, and ending a 12-play, 84-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Thompson (SO, Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS).
• St. Olaf took a 14-13 lead on two long touchdown passes by Lars Prestemon -- 61 yards to Christian Graske and 58 yards to Gabe Alada. The teams then exchanged touchdowns, with Smith's two touchdown receptions giving the Auggies a 28-21 lead at halftime.
• Augsburg pulled away with four touchdowns on its seven second-half drives, with Smith catching two scores, Tretter catching an 18-yard touchdown pass and Tre Lee (JR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) rushing for a two-yard score with two minutes remaining.
• Defensively, Camdin Carlson-Mathies (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (five solo), while Shaquille Young (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) had seven tackles (four solo), 2.5 tackles for-loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Steven Hentosh (FY, Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley HS), Leban Kahin (FY, Edina, Minn./Edina HS) and Dalton Miller (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) all recovered fumbles, and Sydney Royalty (JR, Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King HS) had an interception and 44-yard return.
• Lionel Gates (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) had five tackles each for the Auggies.
• Thompson rushed 12 times for 38 yards and Lee rushed 18 times for 23 yards.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Sheehan's 405 passing yards were the most for an Auggie since Quentin Lake had 410 yards in a 36-34 loss to Carleton on Oct. 13, 2018.
• Smith's 136 receiving yards and Tretter's 144 yards marks the first time Augsburg has had two receivers with 100-plus yards in the same game since a 48-28 Auggie win on Sept. 23, 2017 at Carleton, with Nick Heenie catching 10 passes for 178 yards, and Ray Guyton Jr. catching 11 passes for 146 yards.
• The back-to-back 50-plus-point victories for Augsburg are its first since Sept. 12 and 19, 2017, a 54-21 win over Concordia-Wisconsin and a 54-28 win over Carleton.

FOR THE FOES
• Prestemon completed 11-of-26 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns against an interception for St. Olaf, with Payton Schott catching five passes for 86 yards.
• Brandon Foster led the Oles with 14 tackles (four solo), while Ben Hestorff had 10 tackles (four solo), including two tackles for-loss and a sack.
