Auggies close regular season with win over Royals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jennifer Bobaric (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) figured in the scoring on all three Augsburg University goals on Saturday afternoon, scoring twice and adding an assist in the Auggies' 3-1 win over Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Bethel 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-6-2 overall (6-4-1 MIAC), Bethel 5-12-0 overall (3-8-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Bobaric opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing off a 20-yard sprint up the middle with a blast from the top of the 18-yard box.
• After Bethel tied the game 11 minutes later, the Auggies took the lead back 1:51 into the second half, as Ana Ortiz (SR, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus Catholic HS) scored her fifth goal of the season, slamming home a centering pass from the left wing from Bobaric.
• Bobaric secured the win in the 62nd minute. Jaelyn Nedelcoff (FY, Oregon, Wis./Oregon HS) gained the ball at midfield, slid a pass to an open Bobaric on the left wing, and Bobaric sliced a shot across to the right corner of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
• Augsburg was able to utilize many of its bench players in its final regular-season game of the season before the MIAC postseason playoffs, as 20 Auggies saw game action. Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 13-9 margin in the game.
Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) had three shots in the game, the lone starting field player to play all 90 minutes.
• Goalkeeper Aspen Brockhouse (SR, Chaska, Minn./Des Moines (Iowa) Christian HS) improved to 5-1-0 on the season with a five-save effort.

FOR THE FOES
• Rachel Waterman scored at the 23:01 mark for Bethel, fielding a free ball at the top of the 18-yard box and scoring after a teammate, Brockhouse and an Auggie defender collided on a reach for the ball.
• Izzy Smith had six saves in 87 minutes in goal for the Royals.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg will compete in the MIAC playoffs for the 12th time under 23-year head coach Mike Navarre, and the seventh season in a row (no MIAC playoffs were held in the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
• The multi-goal game was Bobaric's second of the season. Augsburg is 6-1 this season in games in which Bobaric has scored a goal.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "It was a solid team effort today. We were able to construct some great goals and get several players the opportunity to play. We are excited about the opportunity to compete for the MIAC playoff championship and play Gustavus on Monday. Gustavus is a solid team who definitely earned their win against us earlier this season, so I'm sure they will be confident and pose a great challenge for us."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will open the MIAC playoffs with a quarterfinal game at Gustavus on Monday (11/1) at 2 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
