Auggies top Saints with late goals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring twice in the final 14:48 of play, the Augsburg University women's soccer team rallied for an important 2-1 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, St. Scholastica
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-3-2 overall (3-1-1 MIAC), St. Scholastica 3-6-2 overall (3-2-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despite Augsburg outshooting St. Scholastica by a 22-10 margin, the game was a tight, scoreless affair until the 73:52 mark, when St. Scholastica's Hunter Zamzow scored on a free kick from 45 yards out that took a tricky bounce around Auggie goalkeeper Iz Shuster (SO, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS).
• Ana Ortiz (SR, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus Catholic HS) tied the game for the Auggies just 80 seconds later, heading home a corner kick by Molly Conners (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS).
• Ortiz played a major factor in the go-ahead goal for the Auggies with 5:08 left in regulation. She gained the ball from Rachel Montgomery (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), played through a St. Scholastica defensive challenge, worked the ball up the right wing and threaded a perfect pass between two defenders to Jaelyn Nedelcoff (FY, Oregon, Wis./Oregon HS), who sprinted to the six-yard box and put a short left-foot shot off the St. Scholastica goalkeeper and into the net.
• Shuster had two saves in goal for Augsburg.
• Ortiz had five shots for the Auggies, while Nedelcoff and Jennifer Bobaric (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had four shots each.

FOR THE FOES
• Morgan Friday had four shots in the game for St. Scholastica.
• Saints goalkeeper Brianna Jorgenson had seven saves.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "I was very proud of the mentality we had tonight. We created some great opportunities, and ultimately were able to impose a will upon the game that was inspiring to see. We still have a lot of work in front of us, starting with a strong Saint Mary's team on Saturday."
