Auggies earn victory over Hamline in MIAC opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team opened up its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 64-62 win over Hamline University at Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies were the stronger team in the opening frame, closing the first quarter with a 24-17 lead over the Pipers. Hamline fought back in the second quarter, eliminating the seven-point deficit as the game headed to halftime in a 35-35 tie.
• The third quarter remained tight as the Pipers edged the Auggies 14-11 in scoring to carry a 49-46 lead into the final quarter. 
• The Auggies scored the first three points of the fourth to take a 50-49 lead, eventually stretching the lead to seven with just over four minutes remaining. The Pipers managed to tie the game at 58 with under two minutes left in regulation, but a pair of free throws from Selena Lor (SR, Winona, Minn./Winona HS) gave the Auggies a two-point lead that they would never surrender.
• Augsburg was the better shooting team in the game, hitting 22 of their 53 attempts (41.5%) compared to Hamline's 19-55 performance. (34.5%). The Auggies also outscored the Pipers 12-5 on fast break points.
• The Auggies maintained a balanced attack on offense throughout the game with three players reaching double figures in scoring. Jaley Coplin (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was the scoring leader for Augsburg as she posted 21 points on 6-13 shooting from the floor. Coplin was particularly effective from beyond the arc, knocking down four of her nine attempts from deep.
Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) had another excellent game, notching her second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The senior also added in four steals, three blocks, and an assist in the game.  
• Lor had her best game of the young season, recording 15 points on 5-11 from the field while adding in two rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Saturday's game was the 79th meeting between the two MIAC teams. The Auggies' win brought the all-time series even closer as Hamline now holds a narrow 41-38 advantage in the series.

 FOR THE FOES
• Coming off the bench, Sarah Loken was the scoring leader for Hamline as she put up15 points in the game.
• Lydia Lecher and Chan'el Anderson-Manning also got into double figures for the Pipers with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will return to action on Tuesday (11/23) at 7 p.m. with a road contest against Bethel University.
