Explosive first half pushes Auggies past Royals

MINNEAPOLIS – Powered by the third double-double of the young season from Joe Palmer (JR, Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) the Augsburg University men's basketball team defeated Bethel University 84-73 on Tuesday night to stay unbeaten in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• With the game tied at 7 each at the 17:29 mark in the first half, the Auggies rolled their way to a seven-point lead less than five minutes into the game. The Royals responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie it up again, but the Auggies jumped back on top less than a minute later.
• The Auggies were dominant the rest of the half, outscoring the Royals 39-20 over the last 13:29 of the half to take a 53-34 lead into halftime.
• The Royals were more efficient shooting the ball in the second half (54.5% vs Augsburg's 38.5%), but Augsburg hung on to the lead for the duration of the game and cruised to an 11-point victory.
• The Auggies dominated nearly every statistical category of the game as they outscored Bethel 19-6 off of turnovers, 15-4 in second-chance points, 50-24 in the paint, and 17-0 in fast break points.
• Palmer was the scoring leader for the Auggies as he recorded 20 points on nine-of-14 shooting and added in 11 rebounds for the double-double along with four assists and a steal.
Conner Knoepfle (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had his best game of the season, notching 15 points on five-of-nine from the field. Will Schmidt also had a season-high in points with 12 on five-of-nine shooting.
Bradley Winter (JR, Winona, Minn./Winona HS) got into double figures for the first time this season with 11 points on five-of-eight shooting. Rayquan Moore (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) was a solid contributor off the bench, recording 10 points, an assist, and a steal for Augsburg.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Tuesday's game was the 97th in the series between the two teams with Augsburg now holding a commanding 60-37 advantage in the series all-time.

FOR THE FOES
• Tommy Jensen was the leading scorer for the Royals with 21 points on six-of-10 shooting to go along with three rebounds and three assists
• Zach Doely and Sam Nelson added 16 points and 10 points for Bethel, respectively.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will return to action after Thanksgiving with a home matchup against St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1.
