Auggies top St. Olaf for sixth straight win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team extended its win streak to six and kept its perfect conference record intact on Saturday with a 71-52 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over St. Olaf at the Skoglund Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sparked by an early 16-0 run and a five-of-nine shooting performance from beyond the arc, Augsburg got off to a quick start and outscored the Oles 23-7 in the first quarter. Augsburg continued to control the game in the second quarter, outscoring St. Olaf 19-12 to push the lead to 23 at the half.
• The third quarter was a tighter affair with each team connecting on seven shots and putting up 18 points. St. Olaf fought back in the final frame and outscored the Auggies by four, but it was too little, too late as Augsburg cruised to the 19-point win.  
• The Auggie defense had another strong outing, holding the Oles to just 18-of-56 from the floor (32.1%). The Augsburg offense connected on 27 of 58 shots from the floor (46.6%) including seven-of-20 (35.0%) from deep.
• Augsburg was dominant in the paint, outscoring the Oles 36-18. The Auggies were also better at capitalizing on offensive rebounds and turnovers with a 20-14 advantage off turnovers and a 15-4 advantage in second chance points.
• Anja Smith (SO, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) notched a double-double off the bench for the Auggies, scoring 13 and grabbing 11 boards in a five-of-nine shooting performance.  
• Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) anchored the Auggie scoring attack once again with 16 points on six-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, four blocks, two steals, and two assists.
• Jaley Coplin (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was a key contributor on offense, scoring 14 points and adding four rebounds and two assists in the game. Kalena Myers (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) also got into double figures, making four of her nine shots for 10 points while two boards, two assists, and a steal.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

• Following Saturday's game, Masello now ranks second in the MIAC overall statistics rankings with 9.8 rebounds per-game and 15.8 points per-game.
• The Auggie victory stretched their winning streak over St. Olaf to nine games with their last loss to the Oles coming in 2017.

FOR THE FOES

• Rachel Kelly was the scoring leader for St. Olaf with 10 points on four-of-nine shooting.

• The Auggies will return home after the new year for a MIAC matchup against St. Catherine University on Wednesday, January 5 at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
