WINONA, Minn. – In the third game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series between the Augsburg University baseball team and Saint Mary's University, the Auggies were edged 5-4 by the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORE: St. Mary's 5, Augsburg 4

RECORD: Augsburg 3-13 overall (1-7 MIAC), St. Mary's 12-7 overall (6-4 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Despite out-hitting the Cardinals 9-to-7, the Auggies came up short losing 5-4.
• Saint Mary's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Augsburg cut the deficit in half in the second inning. The inning started with Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) reaching on a Cardinal error. Then singles by Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) and Matt Krenz (JR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS), loaded the bases. Josh Tyler (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) hit a groundout RBI, scoring Salz.
• In the third inning, Salz hit a three-run home run -- his second homer of the year -- scoring Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) and Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS), giving the Auggies a 4-2 lead. Mattson reached the bases on a single to right field and Weiss reached on an error.
• The Cardinals slowly regained the lead, adding single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Augsburg came close to scoring in the top of the eighth, loading the bases off singles by Weiss, Baumgart and Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), but a timely double play by the Cardinals ended the inning.
•  Luke Johnson (SO, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) got the pitching start for Augsburg and threw 4.2 innings, striking out one batter. Matthew Moe (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) took the pitching loss, striking out three in 3.1 innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES 
• Tyler O'Brien and Jack Arndt both hit home runs for the Cardinals. O'Brien scored two runs while Arndt had one.
• Justin Haugo picked up the pitching win, striking out two batters and holding the Auggies scoreless in four innings of relief.
