Augsburg splits twinbill with Concordia

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team claimed a doubleheader split with Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Parade Stadium, scoring a 3-2 win in the opener while falling 5-0 in the nightcap. 

THE BASICS
SCORE: Augsburg 3, Concordia 2; Concordia 5, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 4-14 overall (2-8 MIAC), Concordia 9-7 overall (3-3-3 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and added another run in the sixth. Concordia scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth, cutting the Auggie lead to 3-2, but the Auggies were able to hold on for the win. 
• Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) led things off for Augsburg in the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Josh Tyler (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Noah Thomas (SO, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) reached the bases on a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively. Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) then singled to left field, scoring Baumgart and Tyler. 
• The Auggies' run in the sixth came off the bat of Thomas, who hit a single to right field, plating Ty Gage (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS). 
• Mattson and Thomas both finished with two hits, while Gage had one hit for the Auggies. 
• Mathew Nicklay (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) picked up his first win of the season, striking out three batters while walking one in six innings of work. Matt Moe (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) earned his first save of the year, pitching one inning of relief. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Concordia took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then the game remained scoreless, until the Cobbers added three unearned runs in the eighth, solidifying the 5-0 win over Augsburg. 
• Two of the four Augsburg hits in the game came from Baumgart, who had a double in the second inning and a single in the seventh. Mattson and Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) accounted for the other two hits, both hitting singles. 
• Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) pitched seven innings for Augsburg, striking out four batter and walking one. Only two of the four runs given up by Jerylo were earned. 

FOR THE FOES 
• Sean McGuire his a two-run home run for the Cobbers in the second game.  
• Pitcher, Ty Syverson threw eight innings of relief in game two, striking out 14 against 27 batters faced.
