Auggie baseball drops home-opener to Scots

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team fell to Macalester College in a high-scoring 19-16 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Friday afternoon, their home-opener at Parade Stadium. 

THE BASICS
SCORE: Macalester 19, Augsburg 16

RECORD: Augsburg 2-9 overall (0-3 MIAC), Macalester 1-0 overall (1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• A total of 35 runs were scored in the matchup between Augsburg and Macalester, with scoring occurring in six out of nine innings of play, taking 3:39 to complete. 
• Leading the Auggies offensively was Ty Gage (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), who went 2-for-5 with five RBIs and scored two runs. Gage hit a bases-loaded double to right-center in the sixth inning and had a RBI single up the middle in the third. 
Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) each had a double in the game, while both earned two RBI and scored two runs each. 
Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) hit two RBI singles to the right side and scored a run for the Auggies. Kyle Hoppe (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) crossed home plate three times in the game. 
• Augsburg batters were very patient at the plate, drawing 17 walks. Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) drew five walks, Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) drew four, and Hoppe walked three times. The Auggies scored 16 runs but had multiple opportunities to add more, leaving 12 runners left on base throughout the game. 
• Mathew Nicklay (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) got the pitching start and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings of work. Matt Moe (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) and Luke Johnson (SO, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) pitched 2.2 and 3.0 innings of relief, respectively. Johnson struck out four Scots' batters, while Moe had two strikeouts. 

FOR THE FOES 
• Michael Moreno went 2-for-4 in the game -- including a grand slam -- with six RBIs and scoring two runs. 
• Sam Rosevear and Lian Lincoln eached hit a homerun for the Scots. Rosevear had four RBIs and scored two runs, while Lincoln had a RBI and scored two runs.
