ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Behind a strong pitching effort by
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), the Augsburg University baseball team picked up a win against Macalester College in the first game of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Nicholson Field.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Augsburg 8, Macalester 3; Macalester 12, Augsburg 1 (7 inn.)

RECORD: Augsburg 3-9 overall (1-3 MIAC), Macalester 2-1 overall (2-1 MIAC)
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• In his first win of the season, Jerylo pitched a complete seven-inning game, striking out six and giving up only one walk, against 31 batters faced.
• Trailing 1-0 heading into the second inning, Augsburg was able to tie the game on a
Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) single, plating
Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS). Salz reached the bases with a leadoff double and was advanced to third on a single by
Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS). Macalester added two more runs in the bottom half of the frame.
• The Auggies tallied four runs in the top of the third, taking a 5-3 lead. The first run scored off the bat of Weiss, an RBI single that drove in
Kyle Hoppe (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS).
Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) crossed home plate, tying the game, on a wild pitch.
Ty Gage (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) hit a two-run single, scoring Weiss and Tomony.
• Augsburg scored three more runs, off four hits, in the fifth inning. The inning started with back-to-back singles by Weiss and Tomony, and then both Auggies came around to score on a double to right field by Gage.
Josh Tyler (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) then singled to left field, scoring Gage for the final run of the game.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Augsburg bats were held quiet in the second of the doubleheader, only collecting three hits and scoring a single run, falling to Macalester 12-1 in seven innings.
• Macalester scored five runs in the second inning, three runs in the second and third innings, and one more run in the fifth.
• The lone Augsburg run was scored in the seventh inning.
Will Weick (FY, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored an unearned run when Jerylo reached first base on an error.
• All three Auggie hits were singles, hit by Stoik,
Noah Thomas (SO, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) and
Matt Krenz (JR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS).
• Five Augsburg pitchers saw the mound in the game, with Stoik getting the start.
Weston Schug (JR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) made his season-debut with 1.1 innings of relief.
Kaden Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS),
Cam Fischer (FY, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) and
John Retterath (SO, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) all pitched in relief for the Auggies.
FOR THE FOES
• Kenny Rodriguez went 4-for-6 with two RBI in the doubleheader, scoring four runs.
• Ty Benz picked up the win in the second game for the Scots, striking out four batters, giving up three hits and holding the Auggies scoreless in five innings pitched.
