MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind strong pitching efforts from
Mathew Nicklay (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), the Augsburg University baseball team picked up its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of the year, beating Carleton College 3-0 and 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Parade Stadium.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Nicklay pitched a complete-game shutout over the Knights, giving up only three hits, two walks and striking out two in seven innings.
• The Auggies had only five hits in the game -- three in the second inning and two in the fifth -- but were able to piece them together to score three runs.
• Augsburg got on the board in the second inning, starting when
Reilly Nolin (SR, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) doubled to left field, scoring
Ty Gage (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS). Nolin came around to score on a
Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) single. Gage got on base with a single through the left side.
• In the fifth inning, Nolin had a lead-off triple to left field and then scored when
Noah Thomas (SO, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) hit a single to right center, giving the Auggies the 3-0 lead.
• The Augsburg outfielders had 10 fly ball putouts in the game, leading them was Thomas who had six.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• In eight innings of work, Jerylo gave up only two hits and one unearned run, while striking out six batters against two walks.
Chase Thomley (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) collected his first save of the year, pitching one inning of relief.
• The Auggies scored the first run of the game in the third inning, when Gage crossed home plate as an unearned run.
• The game remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Augsburg scored two runs, taking a 3-0 lead.
Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) started the inning by drawing a walk.
Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) singled to right field, advancing Weiss to third base. Gage then singled through the right side, scoring Weiss; followed by a single to right field by Nolin, scoring Baumgart.
• The lone run of the day for Carleton came in the eighth inning, an unearned run.

Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) had a double in the fourth inning, the only extra base hit of the game for Augsburg. Thomas collected a single in the fifth.
• Mattson and Thomas both had six fly-ball putouts for the Auggie defense.
FOR THE FOES
• Kiefer Lord pitched a complete game in game one, striking out five batters and only walking one, in six innings of work.
• Luke Mager went 2-for-4 in game two, including a double, for the Knights.
