Auggies stung twice by walk-off decisions

WINONA, Minn. -- The Augsburg University softball team was victimized twice by walk-off losses to Saint Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Saint Mary's 5, Augsburg 4; Siant Mary's 7, Augsburg 6 (9 innings)
LOCATION: Saint Mary's Field, Winona, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 4-24 overall (1-15 MIAC), Saint Mary's 8-18 overall (5-9 MIAC).

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg held a 4-0 lead after five-and-a-half innings, but the Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh, with a two-run double ending the game.
• A single by Olivia Dynneson (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) plated Sabriya Passmore (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) in the third inning for the Auggies.
• Augsburg scored three runs in the sixth. Passmore reached base on an error to open the frame, moved up two bases and scored on a wild pitch. Sara Deming (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) singled and came into score on another error, and Grace Syson (FY, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes Academy HS) singled to drive home pinch-runner Sammie Balint (SO, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
• Passmore went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, scoring twice, while Deming and Chloe Stockinger (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had two hits each.
• Passmore took the pitching loss in a complete-game effort, striking out two against four walks.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The second game was a back-and-forth contest, tied 5-5 after six innings. The Auggies scored a run in the top of the ninth, but for the second straight game, a two-run double by the Cardinals ended it in walk-off fashion. The Auggies had a season-high 15 hits in the game, but stranded 18 runners on base.
• Syson hit an RBI single to bring home Stockinger in the second inning, and Malia Schubert (FY, Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. An RBI single by Olivia O'Connor (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) plated Deming in the fifth.
• Two runs came across in the sixth inning, as Passmore and Katie Manecke (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) came in to score when Deming reached on a throwing error.
• In the top of the ninth, Mackenzie Evenson (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) walked, moved up a base on a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Deming.
• Manecke went 4-for-5 with a double to lead the Auggies, while O'Connor had three hits. Passmore, Deming and Syson had two hits each, with Passmore hitting a double.
• O'Connor pitched a complete game for the Auggies, striking out three against three walks.

FOR THE FOES
• Hallie Schmeling went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a double to lead the Cardinals in the first game.
• Justine Schulz hit two doubles in going 3-for-5 with three RBI in the second game.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg's scheduled home doubleheader against Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday (4/25) has already been postponed due to anticipated wintry weather. The Auggies will travel to face Bethel next Saturday (5/1) at 1 p.m.
• Saint Mary's is scheduled to host Bethel on Sunday (4/25) at 1 p.m.
