Augsburg softball dropped twice by Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The Augsburg University softball team dropped a pair games at Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Bethel 12, Augsburg 3 (5 inn.); Bethel 8, Augsburg 0 (6 inn.)
LOCATION: Ona Orth Field, Arden Hills Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 4-26 overall (1-17 MIAC), Bethel 25-7 overall (18-4 MIAC).

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg surrendered four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to fall behind early, before scoring its three runs in the top of the fifth.
• The Auggies hit back-to-back singles, by Chloe Stockinger (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) and Grace Syson (FY, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes Academy HS), with one out in the fifth inning. Malia Schubert (FY, Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) reached base on a fielder's choice with Stockinger being put out at home, and Katie Manecke (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) reached base on an error, plating Syson. Mackenzie Evenson (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit a two-run single to left to bring home Manecke and Schubert.
Sara Deming (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Evenson, Stockinger and Syson had base hits for the Auggies in the first game.
• Augsburg used three pitchers in the opener -- Sabriya Passmore (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Bella Kallas (SR, Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) and Myia Sarff (FY, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS).

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg was limited to three hits in the second game -- singles by Evenson and Olivia O'Connor (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) in the first inning and a double by Schubert in the second inning. Augsburg had just three baserunners, all reaching on walks, in the final four innings of play.
• Bethel scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, then scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the sixth in end the game via the NCAA eight-run rule.
• O'Connor pitched a complete game for the Auggies, striking out one while walking two.

FOR THE FOES
• Kayla Simacek struck out 10 against one walk in five innings in the first game for the Royals, while Rylie Perkins had five strikeouts against four walks in six innings in the second game.
• Jamie Axelberg had two hits for the Royals in the first game, and Amanda Gemueden scored three runs. Allie Fauth went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the second game.
