Auggies drop twinbill to Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team was swept by Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Gustavus 9, Augsburg 2; Gustavus 6, Augsburg 5

RECORD: Augsburg 7-21 overall (5-15 MIAC), Gustavus 22-3 overall (17-3 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Gustavus earned 14 hits and climbed to a 9-0 lead, while holding Augsburg hitless, through six innings of play. The Auggies two runs, off two hits, both came in the seventh inning. 
• In the seventh inning, Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) hit his first collegiate homerun to right field, putting the Auggies on the board. Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS), who reached on an error. 
Mathew Nicklay (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) suffered the pitching loss, giving up five runs on nine hits, while striking out two in three innings of work. Cam Fischer (FY, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) threw 2.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on five hits. Lukas Nyberg (SO, St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) finished on the mound for Augsburg. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Gustavus jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Augsburg took a 3-1 lead after scoring two runs in the third and one run in the fourth inning. 
Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) scored the first Auggie run of the game, off a Gustavus error. Stoik then scored when Baumgart doubled down the right field line. In the third inning, Reilly Nolin (SR, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) drew a two-out walk and then came around to score on a double to left center off the bat of Mattson. 
• Augsburg added two more runs in the sixth inning, taking a 5-1 lead. Stoik hit a two-RBI double to right center, scoring Tim Lavin (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Nolin. Nolin reached the bases on an infield single. 
• The Gusties added a run in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the eighth inning, cutting the Augsburg lead to 5-4. Weiss had a single up the middle in the ninth inning, but the Auggies were unable to add to their lead. Gustavus collected three timely hits in the bottom half of the final frame, scoring two runs and earning the 6-5 victory. 
• Weiss finished 2-for-3 in the game, while Baumgart went 2-for-4. Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) had a single for the Auggies, while Mattson hit a double. 
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) started on the mound for Augsburg, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out five batters in seven innings of work. Chase Thomley (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits, through 1.2 innings of relief. 

FOR THE FOES 
• In game one, Bryce Novak pitched six innings for Gustavus, giving up only one run on one hit, while striking out nine batters against one walk. 
• Jake Christenson finished 2-for-3, with three RBI and scored a run in game one, while scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two.  

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts the University of Northwestern-St. Paul for a single 9-inning game on Saturday (5/8) at 2 p.m at Parade Stadium. 
• Gustavus hosts St. Mary's for a MIAC doubleheader on Sunday (5/9) at 1 p.m.
