MINNEAPOLIS -- In the last regular-season home game of the year and senior day, the Augsburg University baseball team dropped a 5-1 nonconference decision to the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg got on the board in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead when
Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) singled to right field, scoring
Kyle Hoppe (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS). Despite collecting six more hits throughout in the game, Augsburg stranded six base runners and were held to only one run.
• Northwestern tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning, then added four runs -- three unearned -- in the top of the ninth.
• Salz had two more singles after his RBI single in the first inning, finishing 3-for-4 on the day.
Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) finished 2-for-4, with singles in the sixth and eighth innings.
• The other two Auggie hits came from
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and
Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS), who each singled in the fourth inning.

John Retterath (SO, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) started on the mound for Augsburg and had an impressive seven-inning performance, giving up only one run on four hits. Retterath threw 97 pitches, striking out seven batters against four walks.
Kaden Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) suffered the loss, giving up two runs (one unearned) on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Matthew Rones (JR, Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) finished on the mound and gave up two unearned runs.
FOR THE FOES
• Philip Wall earned the pitching win, allowing only one run on seven hits in eight innings of work. Wall threw 111 pitches, striking out nine batters and walking two.
• Aaron Severson went 2-for-4, including a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth inning.
