HOW IT HAPPENED
• Bethel climbed to a 5-0 lead over Augsburg in the first five innings of play, only allowing two Augsburg hits -- a double by
Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) in the fourth inning and a single off the bat of
Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) in the fifth.
• The Auggies were finally able to score a run in the sixth inning, when Stoik hit a double to right field and then came around to score on a
Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) double down the left field line. The Royals added a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, taking the 6-1 lead.
• The Augsburg bats came alive in the eighth inning, scoring five runs off six hits, tying the game 6-6.
Noah Thomas (SO, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) drew a walk to start the inning.
Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) and Stoik had back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) then hit a RBI groundout, scoring Thomas and advancing the runners. Mattson crossed home plate on a single to left center by Salz.
• After a Bethel pitching change, the sixth-inning Auggie scoring continued when
Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) had a groundout RBI, scoring Stoik. Then Tomony singled down the right-field line and scored Salz.
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) entered the game as a pinch-hitter and hit a single to right center, keeping the Augsburg offense alive with two outs.
• The Royals made another pitching change in the inning, while
Josh Tyler (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) came in as a pinch-hitter and hit a single to right center, scoring the tying run of
Tim Lavin (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), who was a pinch-runner for Tomony.
• Unfortunately, Bethel responded in the bottom half of the eighth inning, scoring two runs (one unearned) on three hits. Augsburg was unable continue its offense outburst and went three-up-three-down in the ninth inning, finalizing the 8-6 victory for the Royals.
• Four Augsburg pitchers saw the mound in the game. Collectively they gave up nine hits and eight runs (two unearned), while striking out two against four walks.
