Volleyball falls twice on 1st day of Augsburg Invite

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 22-ranked Augsburg University volleyball team lost both matches 3-0 on Friday at the Augsburg Invitational, first to the No. 13-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and then to Wartburg College.

MATCH 1 - AUGSBURG VS. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE

UW-Eau Claire def. Augsburg 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22)
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-2 overall, UW-Eau Claire 8-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Augsburg struggled to create a consistent offensive attack, being held to a .206 hitting percentage by the Blugolds. The second and third sets had great back-to-back action -- with 21 tie scores and 11 lead changes -- but the Auggies were unable to find a way to secure a win. UW-Eau Claire earned a .368 hitting percent, en route to remaining unbeaten with the three-set victory over Augsburg.
Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) led the Auggies offensively with 13 kills, hitting .400 on 25 attempts. Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) had seven kills and three block assists for Augsburg. 
• Finishing with five kills, three kills and a block assist was Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS). Mikayla Coops (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) and Corrina Evans (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) both had four kills, while Coops added two assists, two service aces and a block assist. Brianna Van Well (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) chipped in three kills, a dig and a block assist. 
• Defensive specialist Torrie Rehder (FY, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) collected 13 digs for Augsburg, while Maddie Nierengarten (SR, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) had five digs, two kills and an ace.
• Lexie Lang (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had 17 assists, three digs and two aces. Fellow setter Izzy Barr (SR, River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) finished with 18 assists, a dig and an ace. 

FOR THE FOES
• Kendra Baierl had 13 kills (hitting at .619 percent) and seven block assists to lead UW-Eau Claire, while Makenzie Bachmann and Jordan Witzel had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. 
• Charlie Nelson had 41 assists and 12 digs for the Blugolds, while Taylor Scalia had 13 digs and three assists.
MATCH 2 - AUGSBURG VS. WARTBURG

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• The Auggie offense continued to struggle finding a rhythm against Wartburg, hitting .146 -- the lowest hitting percentage so far this season. 
• Evans had a team-best nine kills, adding three digs and an assist. Gjerde finished with 10 digs, seven kills and an assist, while Fullerton added six kills, three block assists and three digs. 
• Rehder and Nierengarten had 14 digs each for Augsburg. Nierengarten chipped in four kills, three assists and a block assist. 
• Lang earned an assist-dig double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs. Barr finished with six digs and five assists. 
• Claiming the only service ace of the match for the Auggies was Coops, who also had seven digs, five kills and two assists. 

FOR THE FOES
• Kennedy Meister had 15 kills and 12 digs to lead Wartburg, while Kylie Bildstein had 10 kills. Allison Feigenbaum had nine kills and four blocks (two solo). 
• Claire Marsh had 43 assists, 14 digs and three blocks (one solo).
