Augsburg rally falls short in loss to Prairie Wolves

MINNEAPOLIS -- Hamsa Kahin (FY, Edina, Minn./Edina HS) scored a defensive touchdowns and Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) threw two second-half touchdown passes, but a late Augsburg University rally fell short in a 20-19 nonconference loss to Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kahin put the Auggies on the scoreboard first, intercepting a pass and returning it 33 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter. Kahin had a strong defensive game for the Auggies, recording seven tackles (five solo), including two sacks, three tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries.
• After gaining just 50 yards of total offense in the first half and trailing 13-7, Augsburg had a strong second half, outgaining Nebraska Wesleyan by a 244-89 margin after halftime. The Prairie Wolves outgained the Auggies by a 353-294 margin in the game.
• The Auggies used a 12-play, 74-yard drive to tie the game at 13-13 on the first drive of the second half, as Sheehan capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Smith (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), his second touchdown reception of the season.
• The Prairie Wolves took the lead again late in the third quarter, but Augsburg used another long drive, a 10-play, 71-yard march, to cut the lead to 20-19. Sheehan throw an 18-yard scoring pass to Devin Schelske (SO, Pocatello, Idaho/Century HS) in the back of the end zone with 11:30 left to play.
• The teams exchanged the next three drives, and Augsburg gained possession at its own 36-yard line with 6:41 left. Augsburg put together a methodical drive, getting the ball to the Nebraska Wesleyan 8-yard line in the closing seconds. But a 25-yard field goal attempt was pulled wide right with 18 seconds left to play, ending the Auggie comeback attempt.
• Sheehan completed 21-of-35 passing for 184 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. He also gained 54 yards on the ground on nine carries.
Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) caught nine passes for 65 yards, Smith caught five passes for 66 yards and Ims caught four passes for 38 yards. Isaiah Thompson (SO, Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) rushed 14 times for 54 yards.
• Defensively, Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) led the way with nine tackles (four solo), while Camdin Carlson-Matthies (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had eight tackles (six solo).
Lionel Gates (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had an interception, and Steven Hentosh (FY, Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley HS) had a sack.

FOR THE FOES
• Carter Terry completed 30-of-49 passes for 290 yards and a fourth-quarter, 15-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Dannehl. Kevin Tims caught eight passes for 68 yards, Josh Romain caught seven passes for 56 yards, and David O'Connell caught six passes for 72 yards.
• Josh Romain rushed 20 times for 60 yards, and Zander Vargas scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
• Karnell Simpson had seven tackles (three solo) and an interception for the Prairie Wolves.
